Where to go
Once you’re behind the wheel, you’re free to explore Crete as much as you want. As well as Heraklion, which boasts plenty of historical landmarks, you can motor to Chania, which is famed for its beaches and aquamarine waters. Alternatively, Malia offers vibrant nightlife for those looking for a wild night out.
Nearby Crete Airport
A mere 12-minute drive - and 7.1km - from the airport lies Knossos, which boasts the must-see Palace of Knossos, the capital of Minoan Greece. Take a walk into Iraklio wine country, where there are plenty of restaurants serving mouthwatering Greek food, and beautiful scenery to enjoy.
Longer drives
It takes around two hours to drive from Heraklion Airport to Chania, with a distance of 142km between the two. Chania is famous for its beautiful architecture, historic landmarks, and of course the stunning beaches and crystal clear waters.
Eating and drinking
You will find Greek food in most cities around the world - and it’s more than worth experiencing the authentic artefact while you’re in the country. Beware of tourist tavernas, and instead look for understated joints selling meze, and other Greek delights.
Things to do
There are many points of interest in Heraklion, including its archeological museum, the Natural History Museum of Crete and the Museum of Visual Arts. Don’t forget to enjoy the beautiful beaches and take a dip in the sea either!
Sightseeing
Greece is certainly not short of sightseeing opportunities thanks to its lengthy history. See the fortifications of Heraklion - a series of ancient defensive walls around the area - for a glimpse into the past. Koules Fortress, meanwhile, dates back to the early 16th century and is well worth a visit.
