Longer drives

The best sites aren't just close to Corfu Town though, as you head 38km north along the main coastal road to the village of Kassiopi. This picturesque fishing village is home to a number of stunning white sand beaches, some of which give you the option to enjoy some watersports. Kassiopi also has a large Roman fortress that you can explore, which is thought to have once been visited by Emperor Nero. You can also enjoy delicious seafood at any of the town's well-known restaurants.

Alternatively, you could drive 43km south to the second largest town in Corfu, Lefkimi. This has less of a resort feel that Corfu Town as it is one of the most traditional villages on the island. Here you'll find vineyards and olive trees surrounding the pretty village with its sunny squares and winding streets. The village also has two beautiful churches - Agioi Theodoroi and Agios Arsenios - which are renowned for their beautiful architecture.

Mon Repos Estate

If you're interested in learning about the history of Corfu, it pays to head to the Mon Repos Estate, which is located south of Corfu Town. The estate is set away from the shops and bustle of the main town, making it a beautiful and serene location. Once you arrive, you'll find a stunning neoclassical villa set in a wooded parkland. It is also home to the Museum of Paleopolis, which features an interesting selection of archaeological finds. The grounds are also home to two Doric temples, the first of which is in ruins but the Temple of Artemis is still incredibly impressive.

Vidos Island

From the Old Port of Corfu Town, you can hop on a boat and head the mile out to sea to visit Vidos Island. Not only is the island a site of historical significance, it also allows you to take in the views of Corfu Town and the coastline so you can really appreciate how beautiful Corfu is. Vidos Island - which was known as the Island of Hera in ancient times - is ideal for exploring by foot or for relaxing on the beach. The island is also home to fortresses and a WWI Serbian cemetery, showing you just how varied its history is.

Glyfada Beach

While Corfu has numerous gorgeous beaches to choose from if you want to soak up the sun or take a trip in the crystal clear water, Glyfada Beach is a must-visit. The popular location is world-renowned due to its long expanse of golden sand and for its mythical history - it is thought that Odysseus washed up on the beach during the final part of his Odyssey. You'll find the beach on the opposite side of the island, but car hire means the journey can take as little as 35 minutes.
