Car hire in the West Midlands

Car hire in the West Midlands

The West Midlands is a region of England centred on the urban area around Birmingham, Britain's second city. However, it also includes the more rural areas of the surrounding counties of Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, herefordshire and Shropshire, as well as cities such as Stoke-on-Trent and the town of Stratford-on-Avon, birthplace of William Shakespeare.

What I need to know

Visitors can pick up cars from various West Midlands car hire firms. Using Holiday Autos, you can not only identify the best car hire services in the West Midlands, but also book without any card fees with the assurance that cancellation is free if your plans suddenly change.

Where to pick up my car

Cars can be hired in various locations, such as Birmingham, Walsall or Shrewsbury. If you are picking up a car from an airport car hire firm you can do so at several locations around Birmingham Airport (BHX), including the terminal and outside the Holiday Inn.

Where to go

Birmingham offers great attractions such as Cadbury World, the National Sea Life Centre and the Barclaycard Arena. Dudley has its own zoo and castle, while monkey lovers can also see the barbary macaques at Trentham Gardens in Stoke-on-Trent. The southern part of the Peak District National Park is in Staffordshire.

Nearby the West Midlands

The neighbouring East Midlands features attractions such as Nottingham Castle and Sherwood Forest, while to the west lies Wales, with the Brecon Beacons just over the border from Herefordshire. Just to the north is Cheshire and, beyond this, the vibrant cities of Manchester and Liverpool are under an hour away from Stoke-on-Trent.

Longer drives

Those deriving further into Wales can enjoy cities like Cardiff and Swansea in the south, around two and a half hours away, and the Snowdonia National Park to the north. Further south, Bristol is two hours away and it takes around two-and-a-half hours to drive to London.

Eating and drinking

The West Midlands region is famous for its curries, particularly in the 'Balti Triangle' area of Birmingham, which also has a Chinatown in the city centre. The nearby towns of the 'Black Country' feature the classic hot pork sandwich, while Burton in Staffordshire is a major centre of the UK beer brewing industry.

Things to do

Fans of Shakespeare can visit the Royal Shakespeare theatre in Stratford-on-Avon to enjoy a play, or see his birthplace. Sports fans can enjoy league football at several clubs, international cricket at Edgbaston in Birmingham and horse racing in Wolverhampton, while architecture fans can enjoy the Regency and Georgian-era buildings of Leamington Spa in Warwickshire.

Sightseeing

Those interested in the region's great industrial heritage can visit Ironbridge and the historic structure the town is named after, or the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley. For great scenery, designated Areas of Outstanding Natural beauty include Cannock Chase, the Shropshire Hills and the Malvern Hills.
