Where to go
Sunderland is not thought of as a beach resort, but it has some fine stretches of sand, particularly at Seaburn. The National Glass Centre is a great place to go to see contemporary glassworks and glassmaking. The Monkwearmouth Station Museum was once Sunderland's main railway station and now offers a great insight into the city's rail heritage.
Nearby Sunderland
Nearby Newcastle is famous for its nightlife and culture, while Gateshead features the Segedunum Roman Fort, at the eastern end of Hadrian's Wall. Nor is that the only great history to be enjoyed, for Durham offers plenty with its magnificent cathedral and castle. Tynemouth is the most popular seaside resort in the area.
Longer drives
Longer drives offer a chance to see parts of Hadrian's Wall, or explore the stunning Northumberland National Park. Beyond this lie the Scottish Lowlands and Edinburgh, around three hours away. To the south lies historic York, (an hour and 40 minutes away), while the North York Moors National Park is an hour away.
Eating and drinking
There will be plenty of good traditional English food in Sunderland and, as elsewhere in Britain, it will never be hard to find restaurants serving Italian, Chinese or Indian cuisine. Those trying some drinks might want to try Newcastle Brown, one of many fine beers brewed in the region.
Things to do
Sunderland is a good place for football fans, with The Stadium of Light offering a large, modern venue to see a game. Cricket fans can see Durham playing in nearby Chester-le-Street (half an hour away), while Herrington Country Park is the biggest open space, featuring numerous sculptures.
Sightseeing
If historical monuments like Durham Cathedral and Hadrian's Wall aren't to your liking, try neighbouring Gateshead's Angel of the North, an iconic steel statue designed by Andrew Gormley and one of the region's most noted landmarks. Otherwise, enjoy the seafront at Seaburn, with its two promenades and many amusements.
