Car hire in Stansted

Stansted is in the county of Essex, within easy reach of the UK capital. Nearby London can be reached via the nearby M11 motorway, which leads on to the M25. Stansted has its own airport too: London Stansted (STN).

What I need to know

As there's an airport in Stansted with thousands of passengers flying into the area every day, Stansted car rental options can be extremely competitive. However, we can compare car hire deals from more than 1,500 dealers for you, making sure you get the very best deal.

Where to pick up my car

If you're collecting your vehicle from the airport, you'll find London Stansted car hire suppliers housed in the Stansted Airport Car Rental Village, which is just a short walk from the arrivals terminal. From here, you're just a short drive from the many attractions of London, while the lovely seaside resorts of south-east England are also just a stone's throw away.

Where to go

If you're after the Great British tourist experience of scarlet double deckers, Buckingham Palace and Big Ben, London is the place to go. But if you want to see a quieter, quainter side of the UK, drive east to Southend-on-Sea for a mile-long pier, amusement arcades and proper fish and chips.

Nearby Stansted

Historic university city Cambridge is just a 40-minute drive from Stansted, while Colchester - which has an excellent zoo and fascinating castle - can be reached in 50 minutes. The centre of London itself is an hour from Stansted, where you'll find dozens of iconic attractions.

Longer drives

Oxford, home of the Bodleian Library and some stunning botanic gardens, can be reached from Stansted in an hour and 45 minutes. Alternatively, head to the popular seaside resort of Brighton with its famous pavilion, which is a similar distance away by car but to the south.

Eating and drinking

Just about every cuisine you can imagine is available in the UK capital, so you'll be spoilt for choice on a visit to London. Stansted itself also has a great range of pubs, cafes and restaurants, so you'll never be hungry during a trip to the area.

Things to do

Mountfitchet Castle and Norman Village allows visitors to step back in time more than 900 years to the Norman era. This is the only reconstructed Norman village accompanied by a medieval castle in the world. The House on the Hill Toy Museum is also well worth a visit, with a collection of more than 70,000 artefacts.

Sightseeing

The National Trust-owned Hatfield Forest is just a few miles from Stansted and offers some stunning natural views; this is England at its finest. The viewing area at the nearby airport also provides some fascinating sights as huge passenger planes from all over the world fly in and out of the area.
