Where to go
Lancaster Castle is a fascinating place to visit, not least because it is more accessible to the public than before, having formerly been a prison. The Ashton Memorial offers grand hilltop views and Morecambe provides an attractive seafront with plenty of amusements and a statue of the late comedian Eric Morecambe.
Nearby Lancaster
The city is very close to both the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales national parks. In the former case, Windermere, England's largest lake, is easy to reach while the best features of the Dales include the Ingleborough Caves and the towering cliffs and spectacular limestone scenery of Malham Cove.
Longer drives
With the M6 skirting the city, Lancaster is a great touring base. To the north, Scotland is not far off and the M6 and M74 offer an easy motorway link to Glasgow. To the south are vibrant cities such as Manchester and Liverpool.
Eating and drinking
Lancaster has plenty of traditional English cafes and pubs, with Morecambe offering traditional fish and chips by the seaside. There are also many great country pubs and those who want to try some regional delicacies can enjoy some spicy Cumberland sausages followed by sticky toffee pudding or Grasmere gingerbread.
Things to do
Morecambe offers plenty of fun for those bringing a bucket and spade, while train enthusiasts should visit the railway museum at nearby Carnforth. Lancaster itself has some good museums, such as the Lancaster City museum, which incorporates the King's Own Royal Regiment Museum. Birdwatchers can enjoy twitching in the nearby Silverdale National Nature Reserve.
Sightseeing
There are many famous properties to enjoy near Lancaster. Sizergh Castle near Kendal is one, and those visiting the Lake District can enjoy Dove Cottage, William Wordsworth's home in Grasmere. Among the best scenic views are the vista from Orrest Head, a short climb out of Windermere town centre.
