Where to go
Hiring a car straight out of Tenerife Airport North means you can drive to Santa Cruz de Tenerife in under 15 minutes. The capital is home to the gorgeous golden sandy beach of Playa de las Teresitas.
Driving west for around 30 minutes brings you to Puerto de la Cruz, one of Tenerife’s top resorts. The town’s Sardine Festival and annual Carnaval are two of the island’s biggest events. If your plans don’t coincide with these events, you will still enjoy exploring the busy, narrow streets of the Old Town.
Nearby Tenerife Airport North
Driving laws on Tenerife and other Canary Islands are the same as on Mainland Spain. So that means you drive on the right hand side of the road. Some sections of motorways are limited to 110 kph while others rise to 120 kph, so keep an eye out for speed signs. In towns and cities, this drops to 40 and 60 kph.
The east coast town of Candelaria is just a 23 km drive from Tenerife Airport North. Here, you’ll be able to take a stroll on the lovely Plaza de Patrona de Canarias - a huge open square in front of the serene Basilica of Candelaria. You could also soak up some rays and while away the day on the beautiful New Beach Caletillas.
Longer drives
One of the main benefits of Tenerife car hire is that because the island is only about 97 km or 60 miles in length and just 16 km (10 miles) wide, you can get virtually anywhere in a short space of time. That’s just as well, because some of Tenerife’s finest resorts and towns are on the south coast. These include the harbour town of Los Cristianos and the upmarket Costa Adeje, with its sophisticated sandy beaches.
Eating and drinking
Grilled meat and fish is the typical food of the Canary Islands. As many of Tenerife’s resorts are located on the coast, you can count on many restaurants serving up some amazing fish dishes. Sticking around the northern part of the island, many great restaurants can be found in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Puerto de la Cruz.
Things to do
Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz is a wonderful waterpark with dolphins, sharks, otters and sea lions. It boasts the world’s largest penguin exhibition and the world’s longest shark tunnel. The park also claims to be one of two places in Europe to house orcas.
If you are heading to the southern resort of Adeje, there’s the Siam Park water park, which has something for everyone.
Sightseeing
Tenerife features some impressive natural beauty, including Teide National Park’s Mount Teide, which boasts the highest point in Spain with its 3,718-metre high summit and is also a volcano. It hasn’t erupted since 1909 but studies suggest it could erupt violently in the future.
For less dubious sightseeing, you could witness the dramatic natural scenery of Taganana on the very north coast or visit the island’s various churches and cathedrals, such as La Orotava’s Iglesia de la Concepcion or Santuario del Cristo in San Cristobal de La Laguna.
