Where to go
With 2,000 years of history, there’s plenty for tourists to go at. Aside from its two Roman amphitheatres, which still stage rock concerts today, there’s a top-rate shopping experience, antique market, amazing architecture and a fascinating range of museums. That’s before we mention the 290-acre Parc de la Tête d'Or - one of France's largest parks.
Nearby Lyon
Just 30 km south of Lyon is the unspoiled landscapes of Pilat Regional Natural Park, covering 65,000 hectares with a number of hiking and mountain bike trails.
Heading 34 km north will bring you to Villefranche-sur-Saone, a quiet commune in the Rhône department in eastern France.
Longer drives
Some 123 km southeast is the 76,700-hectare Parc Naturel Régional de Chartreuse. It is off-limits to visitors but from above, you can view the Grande Chartreuse monastery, which is home to some 30 monks who have taken a vow of silence, and are known for distilling the famous Liqueurs Chartreuse.
Eating and drinking
Lyon is the culinary capital of France. Aside from an eclectic mix of fine dining and cheap eats, you’ll be able to try some of the finest and most inventive flavours of ice cream flavours, such as lavender and onion.
If you have the slightest fondness for wine, you should book onto Lyon-Winetours, where you’ll be able to taste fantastic wines and learn about vineyards in the region.
Things to do
We mentioned the Parc de la Tête d'Or, which has three rose gardens, a zoo and a velodrome, but there are many other wonderful green spaces such as the relaxing Parc de Gerland, which runs along the River Rhône, and Parc Sergent Blandan, which only came into being in 2013.
Sightseeing
If churches and cathedrals are your thing, you’ll be spoilt for choice in Lyon, where there is the Eglise Saint Nizier, Eglise Saint Georges, Eglise Saint-Paul and Cathedral Saint Jean Baptiste.
There are some great museums too, namely the Musee Miniature et Cinema, Musee des Beaux-Arts and Institut & Musee Lumiere.
