Driving in Jersey

Despite being quite a compact island, there are more than 350 miles to traverse in your hire car when you reach Jersey. Just like mainland UK, you drive on the left and overtake on the right, making it very easy to navigate.

Some roads can be quite narrow, with some bends twisting between fields and farms, so take care when you’re behind the wheel. The maximum speed across the Jersey is 40 mph, but there are stretches of road where there are more restrictions. The limit in built-up areas in 20 to 30 mph and 15 mph in Green Lanes. Jersey is clearly signposted, so just keep your eyes out.

You must display a nationality sticker on the back of your car and make sure you bring the original copy of your Certificate of Insurance, as well as your driving licence. In addition, you will need to pick up a paycard for parking and these can be purchased from Jersey Tourism, post offices, garages, shops and anywhere displaying the ‘Paycards sold here’ sign.

Longer drives

What it lacks in size, Jersey makes up for in beauty. No matter where you drive to on the island, you are guaranteed to see some amazing views. From stretches of golden coastlines to lush greenery, the island is stunning from every angle. The best way to take in these sights is to hop in the car and go for a trip around the island.

One of the nicest drives to do in Jersey starts in the St Helier, which is the capital of the island. Here you can see the ancient Elizabeth Castle, dip your toes into the sea at the Harve des Pas beach or visit the Maritime Museum and see the New North Quay lighthouse.

From St Helier’s, get onto the A1 and take the A2 to St Aubin’s Bay on the south coast of the island. The beach here is idyllic and you can find fresh fish at the many eateries near the harbour. So, take a moment to eat something delicious and take in the spectacular seafront views.

Next, make your way onto the La Route de Beaumont/A12 and head towards St Ouen’s Bay to visit the Jersey Pearl Centre, where you can see amazing jewellery in a spectacular setting and try your hand at picking a pearl.

Top destinations in Jersey

Jersey is separated into 12 different parishes that have been named after the Christian saints who the ancient churches were dedicated to. Each of these are unique and offer something different to visitors. Your hire car will give you the freedom to take a drive to any of the parishes, but here are the top three.

Gorey

Situated in the parishes of St. Martin and Grouville, Gorey is home to the the Mont Orgueil Castle, which stood strong against French invasion for more than 600 years. There’s hidden artwork and rooms to uncover, a witchcraft exhibition and a ‘wounded man’ statue that showed would-be invaders what laid in store for them if they attempted break in. There is also a beautiful harbour, as well as a great selection of shops, bars and restaurants.

Trinity

In the Trinity parish, you will find the Durrell Wildlife Park, which spreads across 32 acres of wetland valleys, dense woodland and open green meadows. It is also home to a fascinating selection of animals, from a family of gentle gorillas to birds and reptiles of all colours and shapes. You can make a day of your trip to the park, as there are two cafes on site, a children’s play area and amazing gift shops.

St Mary

In the heart of the parish of St Mary sits the La Mare Wine Estate and Distillery. This unique attraction allows visitors to enjoy the surrounding vineyards and gardens, while learning about how wine is made. The estate produces a host of delicious tipples, including some recipes that have been handed down through generations. It’s well worth a visit.
