Where to go

Leeds is a busy, vibrant city offering plenty to do and see in the centre but also providing a great link to the rest of West Yorkshire and other northern cities. For great food and shopping, stay close to the city centre, where you'll find a mixture of well-known shops and local boutiques. The Victorian Quarter offers beautiful buildings and some of the best designer stores, which gives way to the thriving Kirkstall Market.

The city also has historical sites, museums, special events - depending on the time of year - and a number of smaller areas, each of which has its own charm. This means you'll be totally spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing what to do, especially if you have a hire car.

Nearby Leeds

Drive the 24 miles via the A64 to York and instantly become immersed in its interesting and vibrant history. It is a good idea to park outside of York and hop on a Park and Ride bus as finding a space in the city can be difficult. Once you've arrived, you can walk the city walls, get lost in the Rambles while exploring the shops and even go on a boat tour of the gorgeous city.

Another big draw of this area is the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Located in the grounds of the Bretton Estate, you can reach the UK's leading open-air gallery in as little as 20 minutes via the M1. It is recommended that you make a day of it as there is so much to see. You should also wear comfortable walking shoes so you can visit as many of the outdoor exhibits as possible.

Longer drives

Leeds is well placed to allow you to visit a number of other cities, including vibrant Manchester. Located just over an hour away via the M62, Manchester is a shopping mecca and offers a brilliant and varied nightlife to let you dance your evening away. With a rich culture and history, there is plenty to see even if you don't want to hit the shops.

While Leeds is as centrally located as it could be, meaning it doesn't have a beach close by, it only takes an hour and a half via the A64 to reach Scarborough. This seaside town is where the English seaside holiday tradition began. While it isn't in the same league as tropical beaches, Scarborough has a charm that is all its own.

Top attractions to visit in Leeds

With so much to explore in and around Leeds, the flexibility that car hire affords will ensure you get to see as many of the city's attractions as possible.

Kirkstall Abbey

One of the most iconic attractions in Leeds has to be Kirkstall Abbey. The medieval Cistercian monastery is housed in the stunning Kirkstall Park and offers a unique insight into the history of Leeds. Set on the bank of the River Aire, the abbey is beautiful in good weather and hugely atmospheric when it's overcast. Explore the grounds and read all about the history of the abbey before heading up to the former gatehouse for a meal or a coffee.

Royal Armouries Museum

An interesting change from your typical museums and art galleries, the Royal Armouries contains a national display of armour and arms throughout six galleries. Located in Leeds Dock, the museum is incredibly interesting and is sure to have you entranced. If the weather is good, you can head out to the Tiltyard for a live show, which helps bring history to life.

The Grand Theatre

Set in the centre of Leeds is Leeds Grand Theatre and Opera House, which was originally built in 1878. Here you'll get the chance to see performances by award-winning Northern Ballet and Opera North, which seem even more amazing when performed in the elegant theatre. If you don't get a chance to watch a show, you can take a behind the scenes tour, which will let you see how gorgeous the theatre is and teach you a bit about it.
