Where to go

As it's situated right in between the cities of Leeds and Bradford, there are plenty of places to travel to by car from the airport in under an hour, while Sheffield is only a 90-minute drive away. London can be reached in around four hours, with many interesting attractions to stop off at en route.

Nearby Leeds Bradford Airport

A half-hour drive from the airport is the city of Leeds, home to the Royal Armouries Museum and the National Coal Mining Museum for England. Over in Bradford - 25 minutes' drive from the airport - the National Media Museum can be found, along with the former home of the Bronte sisters, now the Bronte Parsonage Museum.

Longer drives

It takes just over an hour to reach the outskirts of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, where you'll find beautiful views and quaint stone-built villages, while Manchester, the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, is around 90 minutes away by car. Here, you'll find the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry, as well as the National Football Museum.

Eating and drinking

It would be wrong to visit Yorkshire and leave without sampling a traditional Yorkshire pudding. Meanwhile, parkin, a spiced ginger loaf cake traditionally eaten on Bonfire Night, also originates from the county. Bradford has a large Asian community, and its many Indian restaurants have seen the city dubbed 'curry capital of the UK'.

Things to do

Having written some of the greatest books of the 18th century including Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, the former home of the Bronte sisters - Charlotte, Emily and Anne - is now a fascinating museum in Haworth, 50 minutes' drive from the airport. You'll get the chance to learn about their lives and how they came to write those much-loved novels.

Sightseeing

The Kirkstall Abbey monastery in Leeds dates from the medieval era and now provides the setting for a range of exhibitions on the history of the area's land and people, while gorgeous gardens surround the ruins. In Bradford, there is some wonderful art to see in the city's historic Cartwright Hall gallery, including contemporary Islamic and Sikh art alongside classic British pieces.
