Barnsley city centre is home to a number of bars, restaurants and cafes, as well as some well-known shops. Queen Street is the place to head to for fashion chains, while The Arcade is where you’ll find independent retailers and designer stores if you’re looking for something a bit different.

Less than 20 minutes’ drive from Barnsley is the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, with a ride range of artists’ work on display in a stunning outdoor setting. The ruined, medieval site of Monk Bretton Priory is well worth a visit for its aesthetics and interesting history. It was founded as a Cluniac monastery in the 12th century and converted to a Benedictine house a century later. Another important site is the Barnsley Main Colliery, where you can see the remains of the coal-winding shaft, which has now been made a Grade II-listed building.
