Car hire in Playa Blanca
Car hire in Playa Blanca
Playa Blanca translates as 'white beach' in English, so as you'd expect, this is a coastal spot with beautiful beaches. Playa Blanca is the southernmost town of Lanzarote, which is one of the Canary Islands, close to the West African coast, but owned by Spain.
What I need to know
Like in all popular holiday destinations, Playa Blanca car hire can be very competitive. We can compare car hire deals from more than 1,500 suppliers for you though, leaving you with more time to soak up the sun and enjoy this gorgeous island.
Where to pick up my car
As Playa Blanca is the southernmost town on Lanzarote, you'll need a hire car if you want to explore the north of the island and there are several outlets situated throughout the town. You could also collect your Playa Blanca car rental from Arrecife Airport (ACE), which is around a 20-mile drive away.

Where to go
With miles upon miles of white sandy beaches, it might be tempting to never leave your sun lounger during a visit to Playa Blanca. But if you want to sample life away from the touristy hotspots, venture to the twice-weekly market at Marina Rubicon or explore the historic castles and fascinating rock formations in the area.
Nearby Playa Blanca
Just a 15-minute drive from Playa Blanca is Los Hervideros, a natural wonder created by a combination of erosion and the solidification of lava over hundreds of thousands of years. When the waves of the Atlantic Ocean roll into these naturally-formed caves, spurts of water are often sent metres into the air, accompanied by a thunderous roaring sound.
Longer drives
Arrecife, Lanzarote's capital, can be reached within 55 minutes from the resort of Playa Blanca. Originally a fishing village, the city now features a wide range of shops, bars and restaurants and is also home to the historic Castle of San Gabriel. Arrecife means 'reef' in English, with the name referring to the rock reef that covers the city's beach.
Eating and drinking
Lanzarote's traditional cuisine tends to be based around the ingredients sourced and grown by the island's residents, which means fresh seafood features heavily on most restaurant menus. Papas arrugadas, potatoes served with garlic, olive oil and herbs, are one of the isle's signature dishes. The local wine is also of a high standard.
Things to do
From Playa Blanca, you can take a ten-minute glass-bottomed boat journey to Lobos Island where you can enjoy tranquil turquoise lagoons or hike up the magically-named Cauldron Mountain. Ferry rides to fellow Canary Island Fuerteventura are also on offer if you want to leave your hire car for the day and explore a little further afield.
Sightseeing
Castillo del Aguila, which translates as Eagle's Castle, dates from the Roman era, with the ruins of the castle surrounded by now-crumbling forts built across a rocky ridge that towers over the village below. Meanwhile, El Golfo is a volcanic crater now eroded by the sea to create a green lagoon and is a fascinating quirk of nature.
