Where to go
Lanzarote, the fourth largest island in the Canaries, is a popular destination with holidaymakers thanks to its warm weather and sandy beaches. However it is also a tempting destination for nature lovers thanks to the Timanfaya National Park, while good quality surf makes it appealing for thrill-seekers.
Nearby Lanzarote
Exploring Lanzarote by car is easy, as the island stretches for just 60 km at its longest point. Arrecife, the island's capital, is just 5 km from the airport by car, meaning you can be exploring the picturesque harbour, historic streets, shops and restaurants soon after arriving on the island.
Longer drives
Located on the opposite side of the island, Timanfaya National Park is a must-see for any visitor to Lanzarote. The volcanic landscape is breathtaking, and it is possible to take a coach trip around the park to see the volcanos and rare plants found there.
Eating and drinking
Lanzarote is a great place to sample some traditional Canarian cuisine, often served as tapas. A plentiful supply of local fish means fish dishes feature heavily on menus, and for a unique dining experience Timanfaya National Park is home to a restaurant that prepares food using geothermal heat.
Things to do
Head to a diving centre to explore the water surrounding Lanzarote and experience some of the best diving conditions in the northern hemisphere. Lanzarote has volcanic caves, shipwrecks and hundreds of species of fish to see if you want to dip below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean.
Sightseeing
Lanzarote's unique landscape means there are many sites of natural beauty that are worth a visit. Jameos del Agua in the north of the island is part of the Atlantida volcanic cave system, and is home to a natural concert hall, restaurant, museum and subterranean lagoon.
The Cueva de los Verdes, or Green Caves, also at the northern tip of the island, are part of the same cave system, and 2 km stretch is open to the public to explore.
