Cape Town International Airport (CPT) is the second busiest airport in South Africa and it has been voted Africa’s best airport five times between 2009 and 2013. It is located around 20 km out from the city centre and very accessible with it being connected to the N2 freeway. This is the longest numbered route in South Africa, measuring 1,401 miles. Heading east on this road will take you to many major towns and cities including Durban, Somerset West, Caledon, and Swellendam before ending in Ermelo.
Being such a high profile airport, there are plenty of car rental companies based at Cape Town Airport, giving you plenty of options with which to compare car hire. This means you will be able to rent a car that will suit your needs perfectly, from a compact city car runaround to a bulky SUV.
All of the Cape Town Airport car rental companies on Holiday Autos have desks inside the terminal itself, so you won’t have too much trouble collecting your car.
Heading straight to the port city of Cape Town is a wise move. It is the most popular tourist destination in all of Africa, thanks to its inviting climate, natural setting and well-developed environment. Cape Town car hire is definitely worthwhile due to being surrounded by a lot of natural beauty, with six nature reserves and mountain areas just an hour’s drive away from the airport. Heading east down the N2 freeway will bring you to the Jonkershoek, Groenlandberg and Hottentots Holland nature reserves.
Taking the R44 and venturing south takes you to the Kogelberg nature reserve and Hottentots-Holland mountain catchment area, as well as the quaint coastal town of Pringle Bay.
Under 90 minutes away is Hermanus on the south coast, which is famous for its southern right whale watching, breathtaking scenery, upmarket shops and Grotto Beach - one of South Africa’s most striking stretches of sand.
Just under two hours from the airport is Gansbaai - a quaint fishing town popular for cage diving with great white sharks and whale-watchers.
