Hiring a car in Miami

Florida is one of the most visited and beloved states in all of the USA, and with good reason. Sun, sea and sand, coupled with the theme parks and animal shows that have become the main reason people come to visit all combine to make Florida a great place to visit, and one of its very best cities, a great place to visit at any time of the year, is Miami.

The city is probably best known for its beach and the fact that it is host to a sort of glamour that is hard to find in an urban environment. And yet somehow Miami manages to make it happen. Among all of the office buildings and beach-side bars, there's the delights of all the quirky little things like the karaoke venues, the poetry slam events and concerts that take over dilapidated warehouses and the wonderful mix of Latin American and American culture into something quite unique.

What you need to know

Miami itself is quite a compact city, and the fact that it has quite congested roads within the Metropolitan area means it can be difficult to drive around sometimes. However, it's always a good idea to have a car to hand when you come to visit Miami, mostly because there's so much more to see in Florida. From Orlando to Jacksonville to Tampa, there are little delights in every city in the state, it would seem, and a car allows you the freedom to partake in all of these.

Whatever you want to drive when you come to Miami, you should make sure you choose to book through Holiday Autos. Our booking tool is simple to use and means that whether you want to hire a larger family car or a sportier car that will let you put the top down and enjoy the sunny roads, you can compare prices from more than 1,500 suppliers, meaning you will be able to easily get the best price from the most suitable supplier to fit your needs.

Where to pick up your car

When you arrive in Miami International Airport (MIA), finding the place to pick up your car is a very easy experience. Car hiring has become so popular in Miami in recent years that the desks have been moved out of the airport main building in order to cope with demand. Now, you will find car hire desks by exiting the main building and going to the monorail, also known as the MIA Mover. This service takes you directly to the dedicated, purpose built car hire block just one mile away, making it simple to find your car when you arrive.

Should you decide that you want to pick up your car at another location, our booking tool gives the option to pick up your car at one of the many car hire offices located around the city. Most of the major companies have offices in the centre, with the majority of these very easy to find and reachable via taxi.

Where to go

Once you have arrived in Miami and picked up your car, there will only be one more choice to make. You're on the road, so what do you want to see first to help kick off that holiday absolutely perfectly?

Nearby Miami

Car hire in Miami is the answer to your prayers, allowing you to experience the best of what Florida as a whole has to offer, and letting you branch out a little from Miami itself. For example, why not travel half an hour to the wonderful Fort Lauderdale? With an energetic young population that makes for a great atmosphere, the Venice of Florida is best known for its mile after mile of canals and some excellent waterside bars and restaurants.

Alternatively, head an hour and 20 minutes out of Miami and you will find Key Largo, the smallest of the Florida Keys. A great place to visit with kids, this is where you can take the chance to swim with dolphins and enjoy the chance to get up close and personal with some of the friendliest and most intelligent animals around.

Longer drives

Of course, as well as having access to things nearby, one plus point of having a hire car when in Miami is the freedom to head further afield and see what the state has to offer at its furthest flung points. One great option is to head north towards Orlando, home of the Florida holiday. Here you will find Wet n Wild, DisneyWorld and Universal Studios, among other fantastic attractions. This is, of course, the perfect drive for families, and kids of all ages will instantly fall in love with Miami.

And to see Florida from another point of view that allows you to experience the history of the state rather than just seeing it as a holiday destination, why not head to Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum, located just two miles from Miami? This is a great place to get down and dirty to with history, as you move through the swamps and learn all about the history of the Seminole Tribe, Florida's native tribe.

Top attractions to visit in Miami

Taking some time out in advance to plan what you want to see and do when you get to Miami is highly advisable, because there's simply so much going on, it's easy to miss out on something truly fantastic.

South Beach

Without a doubt one of the most popular places in Miami, South Beach is a wonderful place to head to both during the day and by night. In the day, you can head to one of the best beaches in the state, although it's best to get there early if you want to get a good place to top up your tan; it gets busy! By night, there are myriad excellent bars and restaurants all along the strip which will provide you with a lively, authentic experience of what it's like to be in Miami.

Miami Metro Zoo

One for any families coming to Miami with their kids, Miami Metro Zoo is a fantastic place to visit that manages to be free from the tourism that tends to make the animal attractions further north in Orlando a less relaxed experience. Located in the city itself, this is a great place to see animals from around the world without ever having to leave the urban comforts of the city. And with 900 animals on site, this cageless zoo is surprisingly diverse.

Everglades

Surely no one is going to come to the south of Florida without taking the opportunity to head to the Everglades National Park? This is a great place to enjoy both the adrenaline pumping of a high speed boat ride with the chance to see some dangerous animals in the wild. Alligators are pretty common in the Everglades, and if you don't see more than a handful of these impressive and ancient creatures when on an airboat ride, you'll have been particularly unlucky.
