Where to go

Weymouth is just across the causeway from Portland Island, which is famous for its wildlife and sea birds. The remarkable Chesil Beach is also adjacent, a huge pebble embankment separating the Fleet, Britain's biggest tidal lagoon, from the sea. A Site of Special Scientific Interest, it contains a wealth of rare plant and animal species.

Weymouth is located on the Jurassic Coast and as well as being a great place to hunt fossils, it contains some beautiful scenery. The Purbeck Heritage Coast is immediately east and the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural beauty is just to the north. The popular holiday town of Bournemouth is just an hour away.

Longer drives

From Weymouth, the cathedral city of Exeter is an hour-and-a-half away, Bristol is just over two hours away and a drive to central London takes around three hours. The New Forest National Park is an hour-and-a-half away, while it takes an hour and 20 minutes to reach Stonehenge.

Eating and drinking

As a traditional seaside town, there is nothing to beat traditional fish and chips. Like anywhere else in Britain's however, it is possible to find dishes from around the world, such as Italian, Indian and Chinese cuisine. Those who like cheese should try Dorset Red, while the south-west of England is famous for its cider.

Things to do

The Sea Life Centre is a great place to see all sorts of fascinating aquatic creatures, including seals, rays, tropical frogs and even deadly piranha fish. Tickets include admission to the Jurassic Skyline, an observation tower with wonderful views along the coast. Weymouth Pavilion provides great evening entertainment with a 1,000-seat theatre.

Sightseeing

Perhaps the most interesting historic building is the Nothe Fort, a 19th-century coastal defence station built to protect the port. The pebbles of Chesil beach are a great place to view wildlife and there are numerous places along the Jurassic coast to see fossils and even dinosaur footprints.
