Where to go

The genteel town of Tunbridge Wells offers simple joys like a stroll down the Pantiles, a collonaded walkway, and the Chalybeate Spring, where the 'wells' part of this spa town's name came from. Penshurst Place is a magnificent palace and garden estate, while Pashley Manor Gardens offers a wealth of floral wonders and regular events.

Nearby Tunbridge Wells

The town is surrounded by part of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), with its rolling hills, lush fields and sandy outcrops. Just 20 minutes to the north are two more AONBs; the Kent Downs, which run to the border with Surrey, and then the Surrey Downs.

Longer drives

Central London is about an hour and a half away, although you may prefer to stop at a train station outside the congestion charging zone. To the south, Brighton is around an hour away, as is the South Downs National Park.To the north, the Medway towns feature several Charles Dickens-themed attractions.

Eating and drinking

Tunbridge Wells has plenty of restaurants serving everything from traditional English fayre through to Italian, Chinese and Indian food. There are several tea rooms serving scones with cream and jam. Kent is a major hop-growing country, so there will be many chances to try a beer with a local origin, while there are even some locally-made wines.

Things to do

The spa town is one for gentle strolls, enjoying gardens and sampling the spring water, but few will confine themselves to it, as the surrounding countryside offers so much beauty, exercise and fresh air, providing a great contrast with nearby London. Families should check out the Spa Valley steam railway, which runs from the town.

Sightseeing

There are many famous buildings to see in the town, and not just along the Pantiles. Try the ornate King Charles the Martyr and the Regency architecture of Calverley Park Crescent. Also, look out for the Oast Houses all over the area - curiously shaped buildings with conical roofs designed for drying hops.
