Where to go

Whether you want to walk along the Victorian pier, wander around the Southport Botanic Gardens or enjoy some thrills at the Pleasureland amusement park, there is plenty to keep you busy in this lovely seaside town. Drive further afield for more beautiful coastal scenery at Lytham St Annes and Formby.

Formby beach is a 20-minute drive from Southport along the coast, where you'll find a red squirrel reserve. Crosby is a 30-minute drive, with its beach featuring 100 iron human-shaped statues by artist Antony Gormley. Liverpool, home of the Beatles and the world-famous Cavern Club, is just a 50-minute drive.

Longer drives

Manchester, with its Hogwarts-esque Town Hall, Old Trafford football stadium and Chinatown, is a 90-minute drive from Southport, while MediaCityUK at nearby Salford Quays can be reached in 80 minutes. Morecambe is 90 minutes up the coast from Southport by car, where you can see a statue dedicated to the great comedians Eric Morecambe (who took his stage name from the town) and Ernie Wise.

Eating and drinking

Like with all English seaside resorts, it would be wrong to go home without tucking into fish and chips by the sea and nibbling on a stick of rock. Southport also has plenty of pubs and restaurants serving cuisine from the UK and across the globe; look out for one serving Scouse, the signature stew of the Merseyside area.

Things to do

The rides and amusement arcades of Pleasureland are a fun place to pass a few hours, while the Southport Model Railway Village is great for train enthusiasts of all ages. The miniature trees and green landscape of the model village attract all kinds of birds during the summer months, making it perfect for wildlife lovers too.

Sightseeing

Bizarre yet fascinating in equal measures, Southport's British Lawnmower Museum is an excellent place to visit. See the world's earliest grass-cutters as well as lawnmowers donated by Prince Charles and Queen guitarist Brian May to name just a few. If you'd rather be outdoors, the views from the promenade across the coast are unbeatable.
