Where to go

The Macclesfield Canal is well worth exploring, with its winding towpaths and fine views of the Peak District. The National Park itself lies just east of the town, with nearby features including the summit of Shining Tor. Sports fans can enjoy football at Macclesfield Town's Moss Rose ground.

Lyme Hall and Park, which feature in Pride and Prejudice, are half an hour away, while the historic spa town of Buxton is 25 minutes away, featuring attractions such as Poole's Cavern and the Pavilion Gardens. The famous Lovell Radio Telescope at Jodrell Bank is only 20 minutes away.

Longer drives

Manchester is half an hour away to the north and Liverpool is less than an hour and a half away. Those seeking some of the most spectacular countryside in Britain can reach Snowdonia in north Wales or the Lake District in around two hours.

Eating and drinking

Macclesfield offers plenty of traditional English food and plenty of takeaways, with Chinese, Italian and Indian cuisine easily available. Visitors to Lyme Park can enjoy some venison sourced from the park's own herd. For another local product, try Cheshire cheese. Local drinks include Robinsons, which is brewed in nearby Stockport.

Things to do

As well as enjoying the canal, those who fancy a walk or a bike ride can enjoy Middlewood Way, a former railway line running over ten miles northwards from Macclesfield to Marple. Walkers can also enjoy Peak District hills like Shining Tor and walks around Lyme Park.

Sightseeing

The Silk Museum is well worth visiting for an insight into the town's industrial past. Tegg's Nose Country Park on the edge of town offers a panoramic view across both Macclesfield itself and also across towards the giant radio telescope at Jodrell Bank, the Clwydian Hills and the mountains of Snowdonia.
