Its location in the heart of Scotland means that Falkirk is surrounded by medieval castles, breathtaking countryside and historic towns and cities, making the town the perfect base from which to explore the rest of the country by hire car. Head north to the Highlands and John O'Groats or drive south towards Hadrian's Wall.

The city of Edinburgh is just a 50-minute drive from Falkirk and is home to the mighty Edinburgh Castle, which sits atop a dormant volcano. If you can manage the climb, the top of Arthur's Seat offers magnificent views across the city. The journey from Falkirk to Glasgow takes around 40 minutes. Here, the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is a particular highlight.

Longer drives

Dundee takes 90 minutes or so to reach by car from Falkirk. Here, Captain Scott's RRS Discovery - the ship that took him on his Antarctic voyage - is moored. The Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift that is able to carry vessels from the Forth and Clyde Canal to the Union Canal, as these bodies of water are positioned at different levels. You can visit to see the wheel in action and even ride in a boat while it is turned via this innovative feat of engineering.

Sightseeing

Scotland is home to some magnificent castles, with Castle Campbell and Stirling Castle both within 30 minutes' drive of Falkirk. Castle Campbell dates from the medieval era and was once visited by Mary, Queen of Scots, while Stirling Castle has a fascinatingly colourful history full of sieges and royal takeovers.
