Car hire Carmarthen

Carmarthen is situated on the River Towy in the Welsh county of Carmarthenshire. It claims to be the oldest town in Wales and according to legend, the famous wizard Merlin was born in a cave nearby. It has good road links to other tourist destinations in the county, but also to some of Wales's biggest cities via the M4.

What I need to know

Carmarthen might be a relatively small town, but you'll have no trouble renting a car in the vicinity as some of the big brands have offices nearby. Why not compare car hire before you go using our dedicated site and helpful map?

Where to pick up my car

If you're flying to Cardiff Airport (CWL), then it would make sense to look into hiring a vehicle there and driving the 67 miles to Carmarthen. However, if you already have transport arranged to your destination, then you'll find Carmarthen car hire companies close to the town for easy pick-up.

Where to go

Carmarthenshire is a huge county and offers everything from mountains and beaches to quaint villages and ancient ruins. There are fun days out available for all the family, plus you're only just over an hour's drive from the Severn Bridge that'll take you into England. It's a real haven for adventurous explorers.

Nearby Carmarthen

Just eight miles from Carmarthen is beautiful Kidwelly Castle, which is well worth a look around. If you want all the trappings of a big Welsh city, you can reach Swansea in less than 40 minutes via the A48. And if it's stunning scenery you're after, head to Llyn-y-Fan Fach in the Brecon Beacons, said to have inspired the tale of the Lady in the Lake.

Longer drives

A little over an hour away from Carmarthen is Cardiff, where you can shop and sightsee to your heart's content. Alternatively, you can use your Carmarthen car rental vehicle to get out into the wilds and explore the Brecon Beacons National Park and the Cambrian Mountains. You can even reach western England on a day trip.

Eating and drinking

There are lots of classic Welsh dishes to try while you're on a break in Carmarthenshire. Don't miss Bara Brith (a traditional fruit loaf), Welsh Cawl (stew), Glarmorgan sausage and Welsh rarebit, all washed down with locally-brewed beer at one of the many homely pubs.

Things to do

You'll be surprised how much there is to do here: The Tin Shed Experience is a World War II-themed museum, while the National Botanic Garden of Wales is just a short drive away. Dolaucothi Gold Mines are on the outskirts of the town and craft enthusiasts will love the National Wool Museum.

Sightseeing

You'll definitely want to keep a camera handy in Carmarthen. Check out the ruined castle in Nott Square and the beautiful listed buildings for a start. You should also enjoy Carmarthen Market, which offers everything from food to hippie handcrafts six days a week.
