Where to go

Bridgend is a thriving, bustling town, but visitors should certainly make a point of closely exploring its most notable landmark - Newcastle Castle. This medieval structure dates back to the early 12th century and overlooks the town centre in an imposing fashion.

Nearby Bridgend

Bridgend lies virtually equidistant between Cardiff and Swansea, so it's worth taking the hire car out to explore these two great cities.

Cardiff boasts attractions such as a stunning castle, the Millennium Centre and the beautiful Cardiff Bay, which is packed with great restaurants, bars and wonderful viewpoints. Swansea also offers much of interest, from Oystermouth Castle to the National Waterfront Museum.

Longer drives

The Brecon Beacons National Park is one of the most beautiful locations in the UK. Ideal for family fun, activity breaks and scenic drivers, this is home to the highest mountain in south Wales - Pen y Fan.

Eating and drinking

Visitors are spoilt for choice when it comes to places to eat and drink in Bridgend. But visitors to south Wales should certainly make a point of sampling some authentic Welsh cuisine, such as cawl, Welsh rarebit, laverbread, Welsh cakes, bara brith and Glamorgan sausages.

Things to do

The Old Police Station & Museum stands in the centre of Porthcawl and was a working police station between 1881 and 1974. Today, the old charge room is home to the Tourist Information Centre. But the building also houses a remarkable museum outlining the area's social and maritime history.

Visitors to the area should also head to Margam Country Park, which boasts 850 acres of parklands bursting with wildlife, history and beauty. Notable features include an imposing Victorian mansion house and an 18th century orangery.

Sightseeing

The south coast of Wales offers remarkable views to visitors, with Southerndown Beach in particular a recommended viewpoint for car hire customers.

Tusker Rock, meanwhile, is a famous hazard for ships sailing in the Bristol Channel, but is a popular spot for divers too.

Drivers are also encouraged to head up the A470 and explore the Welsh valleys, while the nearby Afan Forest Park is another beautiful spot to visit.
