Where to go

When you've picked up the car keys and have your hire car, the only thing left to do is to decide where and what you want to see in the sun-kissed haven that is Murcia.

Do you want to try the local delicacies of Murcia's signature omelette or its locally produced huevas de mujol caviar? Or perhaps you want to head straight to the beach to soak up the sun with the vibrant young locals? Either way, your car hire means you have the freedom to openly explore what Murcia and the wider region has to offer throughout your holiday, meaning the possibilities are endless.

Nearby Murcia

If you want to start your holiday straight out of the traps, one hidden nearby gem is located right by the airport. Before heading to Murcia itself, why not make a point of stopping off at San Javier. This little delight is a coastal town largely unspoiled by tourism. Whilst there, take the chance to stop off at Museo de San Javier for a look at the history of the town, or if you're there on the right day of the week, visit the street market in the shadows of the Parque Almansa Auditorium for an authentic touch of San Javier and the crafts and foods it has to offer.

Other nearby towns worth paying a visit to include Punta Brava, which is famed for its fantastic views across the lagoon, or Lo Pagan, where you can join the locals in the natural mud baths, rubbing the mud into your skin to enjoy its enriching qualities before washing it off in the wonderful, clear warm waters.

It's also worth taking a day out to drive to Santiago de la Ribera, from where you can catch a 40-minute ferry trip to the other side of the Mar Menor. Here, you can enjoy some of the best restaurants in the region and really immerse yourself in the culture of a Spanish city that is not remotely influenced by the need to attract tourists.

Longer drives

While Murcia is a fantastic place to visit with lots to see and do, the benefit of enjoying car hire in the city is that you have the freedom to see more of what Spain has to offer, as well as taking in some of the beautiful coastal routes on the way.

One of the best trips to take towards the coast is from Murcia to Santa Pola, around an 80km drive that should take about an hour. Santa Pola is a perfect little fishing village where you can enjoy the sun away from the tourists. While here, try taking the boat trip to the beautiful and scenic island of Tabarca, or continue that party atmosphere you've picked up in Murcia and head to the marina, where you can try your hand at water sports such as kite surfing.

Or if you want to pepper your holiday with a little bit of history, it can also be worth setting off on the 50km drive towards the stunning natural harbour that is Cartagena. Drive up to the castle that overlooks the city, and from there you'll be able to see history on top of history, from Islamic Spain through the Roman occupation and beyond. It's a breathtaking step back in time that has to be experienced.
