Where to go

It goes without saying that one of the highlights of a holiday to Marbella is the vast expanse of beautiful beaches, but there's so much more to see as well.

Shopping in the city is incredible, with everything from designer clothes stores and boutique jewellery shops to large shopping centres and hypermarkets. You can also find a number of specialty delis, accessory shops, interior decor stores and gift stores.

With a history that stretches back to Roman times, Marbella boasts a rich history that is still seen today. One of the highlights is the beautifully preserved mosaics the Rio Verde villa and baths, which are near the main town.

Nearby Marbella

There are so many places in the Costa del Sol, that you're spoilt for choice when it comes to other places to visit.

Slightly inland, about 30 kilometres up the AP-7 into the mountains you'll find Mijas, a small village that exudes true Spanish culture. Although it no longer hosts events, the bullring is a must-see - as it illustrates the cultural history of the area.

Slightly further up the coast is Malaga - where the airport is based. This is one of southern Spain's most popular destinations boasting stunning beaches and beautiful architecture that draw people in from all over the world.

Longer drives

Make the most of having a car in Spain and drive to some of the other magical destinations that surround Marbella.

Just over an hour north of the city off the A-397 is Parque Natural Sierra de las Nieves. This mountain range covers over 30 kilometres of land, with the highest point being Mount Torrecilla reaching 1,909 metres.

Apart from a rural mountain community, this area is uninhabited, meaning it's retained its natural beauty and agricultural cultivation. Take a walk and enjoy the scenery, or enjoy a horse ride around the mountains. For the more energetic among us, you can even go mountain climbing here.

About an hour and a half south of Marbella down the A-7 is La Línea de la Concepción, which sits on the border of Gibraltar. You can enjoy the beaches and shopping on offer in La Línea, or head just 1km across the border to reach Gibraltar.

Eating and drinking

Seafood is unsurprisingly popular in this area, with fresh fish caught daily and served in the restaurants and cafes. Jamon and Manchego cheese are considered a standard addition to almost any meal, with the simple but delicious flavours impressing time and time again.

Things to do

The Rio Verde Roman villa and baths were once part of the great Roman city of Cilniana. While now all that stands is the floor and small areas of wall, visitors come from far and wide to marvel at the embellished black and white mosaic tiles, placed in patterns never before seen in a Roman Villa.

If you have time, then you should also explore the narrow cobbled streets, which are home to an array of delightful shops and art galleries selling traditional clothes, accessories and handmade goods.

It's down one of these streets that you'll find Plaza de los Naranjos, an area filled with orange trees that is considered one of the most beautiful places in Marbella.

Sightseeing

Being so popular for its beaches, it goes without saying that they are certainly a must-see in Marbella.

Puerto Banus is especially popular, being a luxury marina and shopping complex that is often frequented by the rich and famous. Those of us who want to relax on the beach and enjoy the view will also be quite likely to see celebrities, sports cars and luxury yachts on the horizon.

In fact, every beach in the city boasts white sand and shimmering sea views that truly are unrivalled.

To look down across the whole of Marbella, and even enjoy a game of golf, head up to Los Flamingos golf course. From here, you can look down across the horizon and really take in the beauty that Marbella has to offer.
