Car Hire at Bilbao Airport

Bilbao Airport (BIO) is considered to be the most important airport in northern Spain, handling more than four million passengers every year. It is located 12 km north of the centre of Bilbao, just off the BI-3707 main access roads.

What I need to know

At Holiday Autos, we compare car hire rates from 1,500 rental companies to make sure you get the best price and more than five million customers in over 170 countries have booked their Bilbao Airport car hire through our site.

The benefits of booking through Holiday Autos include no credit card fee, 24/7 customer support and no cancellation charge if your plans change.

Where to pick up my car

Several of Bilbao Airport’s car rental firms operate straight out of the terminal, which means you should be able to spot booths or representatives from your car hire company as soon as you leave the luggage collection area.

Other providers operate a free shuttle bus that will transfer you to the car collection point.

  • “The pick-up was easy, it took 5 minutes from arriving at the desk to driving out the car, and the return took even less time.”

Where to go

Booking your car hire at Bilbao Airport gives you the option of not only making your way to your hotel at your own pace, but also lets you explore Spain’s delights.

Many tourists to Bilbao are keen to see Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum, which is truly one of a kind, and the city’s fine art museum.

Nearby Bilbao Airport

As Bilbao Airport is on the north coast of Spain, there are many gorgeous beaches within an hour’s drive of the terminal. Beaches to keep an eye out for include Sopelana, Playa de Laga, the relatively remote Plentzia and the lesser-known Azkorri.

Bilbao city centre is only a ten-minute drive from the airport. Aside from its remarkable museums, the area includes many relaxing plazas and markets.

Longer drives

Some 157 km southeast of Bilbao Airport is the city of Pamplona, which is famous worldwide for the running of the bulls, where crowds of people convene in the streets before being chased by a small group of cattle.

The city of Logroño is also reachable within a 90-minute drive. Here, you’ll find plenty of glorious churches and pleasant plazas and parks, including the striking Parque del Ebro.

Alternatively, you can actually drive into France in under 80 minutes with the border spitting the two countries sitting 121 km away from Bilbao Airport.

Eating and drinking

Basque cuisine usually consists of meats and fish grilled over hot coals, marmitako and lamb stews, cod, Tolosa bean dishes, paprikas from Lekeitio, Idiazabal sheep's cheese, txakoli sparkling wine and cider and pintxos - northern Spain’s spin on tapas. Txangurro (spider crab) txipirones (baby squid) in their ink and wood pigeon are also common basque dishes.

Things to do

Any first-time visitors to Bilbao really should make it a priority to drop by the Guggenheim Museum. Even it you don’t go inside, the jarring and jagged building is a stunning work of art in itself.

We’d also recommend a stroll around the charming old town of Casco Viejo and the bustling La Ribera Market.

Sightseeing

Bilbao boasts many more examples of striking architecture including the Palacio de Congresos y de la Musica Euskalduna, La Salve Bridge and White Bridge (also known as Zubi Zuri).

There are also many charming squares, such as Plaza Nueva and Plaza Moyua, and cathedrals, like Catedral de Santiago and Iglesia San Jose.
