Nearby Almeria

Alcazaba

This fort takes you back to the very formation of Almeria in the 10th century and its history as a Moorish stronghold in Andalucia. The fort was known as one of the strongest in Spain, and visitors can take a walk through its historic walls and see what it was like to live there over a thousand years ago. The fort now contains lush gardens and water channels, as well as fantastic coastal views to top off your walk back in time.

Refugios de la Guerra Civil

The 10th century was not the only time Almeria was seen as something of a stronghold. During the Spanish civil war in the 1930s, it was the last Republican resistance in Andalucia. The heavy bombing the city encountered meant that engineers built the Refugios de la Guerra Civil, a series of underground tunnels and shelters. Take a walk through the more recent history of the city as you see where people hid and slept, as well as seeing the underground opera house it is home to.
