Where to pick up your car

The easiest place to collect your car is Turin Airport (TRN). You'll find car hire desks in the arrivals hall for many of the companies that operate here, while the pick up point is in the multi-storey car park. Other companies offer meet and greet services or free shuttle buses.

Where to go

Although many travellers to Italy head to the more popular destinations of Rome, Venice or Florence, Turin has plenty to offer. A relatively unsung hero of the country, there are a number of ways to soak up its atmosphere. Head to one of its historic cafes for an excellent cup of coffee, enjoy the lively restaurants or soak in some history at any one of its top attractions.

Fans of chocolate will be in heaven in the city, as Turin is the place that gave the world the first solid bar of sealable chocolate and still has great chocolate shops dotted around. You can also indulge in your love of movies by heading to the National Cinema Museum, which details the birth of Italian cinema in the city. Nearby Turin

If you're in Turin in February, you really have to drive the 50 minutes via the A5 and E612 to the town of Ivrea. The historic Piedmont town has plenty of sites of interest, including the beautiful cathedral and Roman ruins. However, the month of February is also when the Ivrea Carnival takes place and in particular, the Battle of the Oranges. This is exactly what it sounds like, a huge food fight in which locals throw hundreds of oranges at each other.

Another great town less than 30 minutes away is Moncalieri, which is a must visit for food lovers. It offers a great range of bars and restaurants serving up some classic Italian cuisine that shouldn't be missed. There are also some interesting historical sites, including the UNESCO World Heritage-listed castle, which is one of the Savoy Residences. With cobbled streets and reasonably relaxed atmosphere this is a great place to visit.

Longer drives

Lovers of wine can't miss out on trying some of the most sought-after wines in Italy while in this region of the country. One ideal destination that is known for its wine is Alba, which is just over an hour away via the A6. Here you'll find a few different vineyards, at which you can try different local tipples. However, it is a good idea to book a wine tasting in advance as many vineyards have odd opening times. Alba is also famous for its white truffles, so make sure you try some food too.

In under two hours - if you take the A4 - you can be in Milan. One of the world's fashion capitals, the chic and sophisticated city is known for its designer shopping, elegant restaurants and buzzing atmosphere. It is also home to Leonardo da Vinci's famous 'The Last Supper' - which you should book tickets to see before you travel - and some incredible historic buildings.

Top attractions in Turin

You can't visit Turin without seeing some of its top attractions, which is made much easier to do if you hire a car before you arrive in the city.

The Holy Shroud

Perhaps one of the most famous attractions in Turin is the Holy Shroud. You'll find this in the Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista, which is a beautiful Renaissance basilica that was constructed in the late 1400s. The Santa Sindone - Holy Shroud - is only on view for very small periods throughout the year as otherwise it is kept safe in a bullet-proof and climate controlled vault. However, a replica hangs in the cathedral at all times.

Borgo Medioevale

Take a walk toward Turin's river when you want a quieter pace and visit the city's faux medieval village. The castle, shops and artisan studios that make up the village were built as an exhibition back in 1884 but proved so popular, it has been maintained ever since. This is a fun day out that also allows you to make the most Parco del Valentino.

Egyptian Museum

It may seem a bit odd to view Egyptian antiquities while in Italy, but Turin's Egyptian Museum has one of the best collections in the world. You'll find the museum in the Palazzo dell'Accademia delle Scienze. The collection was first started back in 1824 and has since had more added to the initial 5,268 artifacts acquired by King Carlo Felice while in Egypt.
