Hiring a car in Sardinia

Sardinia is a truly exceptional destination for any trip, drawing tourists from around the world to its Emerald Coast. The combination of sunshine, white sandy beaches and stunning green-blue water contrasts wonderfully with the rugged, mountainous skyline giving you plenty to explore.

Not only are there beautiful natural landmarks to venture to, you'll find a huge number of ancient archaeological sites. These give you an interesting insight into this part of Italy.

With so much on offer, it really makes sense to drive during your visit and so car hire can ensure you make the most of your trip.

What you need to know

You can choose from over a dozen different car hire companies when you arrive in Sardinia, with different options available depending on where you want to collect your car. The majority of companies operating in Sardinia are listed as 'excellent' or 'very good' so you can rest assured that you'll get the best service.

To make it easier to find the right car for you during your stay in Sardinia, make sure you use Holiday Autos' booking tool. This will show you how much car hire will cost for the duration of your stay without any hidden charges. You'll also benefit from free amendments, 24/7 support, no card fees and free cancellation.

Where to pick up your car

There are a lot of options in terms of where you can pick your car up in Sardinia, allowing you to choose the most convenient collection point.

Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport (OLB) has a lot of car hire companies operating from it, with the majority of them being found in the arrivals hall of the terminal. Those that don't have pick up points at the terminal offer meet and greet services or free shuttle buses to take you to their offices.

If you're flying into Cagliari Elmas Airport (CAG), you'll find 15 car hire companies available. Most of these have desks in the arrivals hall, although a couple offer free shuttle buses. The same can be said of Alghero-Fertilia Airport (AHO).

Alternatively, you can collect your car from outside Cagliari or Olbia Train Stations, giving you even more options..

Where to go

Once you've picked up your hire car from your chosen collection point, you can start your adventure across the island of Sardinia. You can drive along the coast, taking in the views and hunting for the perfect beach or go further inland for great hikes. Head to any of the amazing historical sites dotted across the island to get a feel of those who used to inhabit it, or simply soak in Sardinia's unique culture.

No matter what you get up to, you'll also have to make the most of Sardinian cuisine, which features handmade pasta, freshly-caught seafood and plenty of delicious flavours. Each area of the island has a different specialty, so it is definitely worth visiting different places to see what food they offer.

Nearby Sardinia

When it comes to historic sites, you're spoilt for choice while staying in Sardinia. If you're flying into Cagliari Airport, one site you need to visit is Nuraghe Su Nuraxi. While thousands of medieval stone towers can be found throughout the island, this site offers the most complete ruins and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can still go inside the central tower to see how it was constructed by the prehistoric people who used to live there.

Of course, you can't really stay in Sardinia without exploring the iconic Emerald Coast. Running from Olbia to Capo de Testa, the coast features some of the most amazing beaches in the world. It is on these beaches that you can fully appreciate the Mediterranean weather while soaking up the sun. You'll also find an abundance of restaurants and cafes offering stunning views.

Longer drives

Sardinia is close to the island of Corsica, so if you fancy a change of scene, why not head across on a ferry to see the beautiful French island. Here you'll find just as diverse a landscape as on Sardinia, however, the culture is very different. Locals on the island are very proud of their Corsican identity, which comes across through their language, events and food.

Another great location that you can reach via ferry is the Maddalena Islands. Drive to the port of Palau to hop on a boat for the 30-minute journey to the archipelago that is located between Sardinia and Corsica. This is the perfect journey to make if you want to enjoy some quieter beaches and fewer tourists.

Sardinia

Olbia and the surrounding areas offer some great destinations that you can visit with ease when you invest in car hire. Make the most of the beautiful coastal location, culture and history of the area while you're visiting by heading to some of the top attractions.

Santa Cristina Nuraghe and the Holy Well

Probably one of the most diverse historical sites in Sardinia can be found close to Oristano. The atmospheric Santa Cristina Nuraghe and the Holy Well are incredibly well-preserved, considering the well temple was used from around 1100 BC. You can climb to the roof of the Nuraghe Tower and look down at the ancient village, which includes a house that still has its roof.

Alghero

If you want to head to a lively town beside the sea, Alghero is the perfect destination for you. You won't find people speaking Italian here, as the primary language is more similar to Spanish and road signs are written in Spanish. In the town you'll find great historic sites, including the church of San Francesco.

Valley of Nuraghi

If you fancy a hike, head to Valle dei Nuraghi, which offers some interesting rock formations as a result of the ancient volcanoes that surround the valley. It is here that you'll also find Nuraghe Santu Antine, which is a 16m-tall prehistoric tower that you can go inside.
