Hiring a car in Rome

At the centre of Italy, this charming city will steal your heart. With history dating as far back the 9th century at the time of the Roman Empire, the city set the foundations to the western world and is certainly not in short supply of fantastic architecture and ruins which can’t be found in any other city on the planet.

Rome oozes vibrancy, with buzzing restaurants, cafes and bars located all over the city, spilling out into the streets. A trip wouldn’t be complete without tasting the great Italian cuisine of gelato, Italian coffee and the array of pasta and pizza dishes.

The city also has a huge arts and culture scene with works dating back thousands of years, telling stories of Rome’s fascinating past. Most famous of all you will find the great Michelangelo’s ‘The Creation of Adam’ located on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, among many other Renaissance style creations.

Where to go

Over five million travellers have explored new places thanks to Holiday Autos, so once you’ve picked up your car keys it’s time to get yourself on the road and start exploring. With the freedom of a hire car, where you choose to visit is entirely up to you, nowhere is out of bounds.

You don’t need to be an art expert to enjoy the art history and modern galleries Rome offers, but if shopping is more of your thing, then head to the Spanish Steps which lead to the Piazza di Spagna, one of the classiest shopping districts in Italy.

Alternatively, if you want to soak up the Italian atmosphere in one of the city’s many squares, then visit the Piazza Del Popolo, where you can admire churches, fountains, monuments, and marble memoirs of historic events in Rome, all whilst sampling some of the local Italian wine and a traditional dish of pasta.

Nearby Rome

If you fancy a leisurely outdoor stroll, then a short car journey will take you to the idyllic Villa Borghese park, where, depending on the season, you will find oranges growing on trees and flowers blooming.

Head slightly further south and you can take a rowing boat out on the lake, visit the zoo, or even see a play at a replica of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. If you want to take in the incredible history of Rome, the two museums Etruscan Museum in Villa Giulia and the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna, are located right next to the park.

If you want to lose yourself among the windy Roman streets, make your way to Centro Storico, where you will find many small local shops and authentic restaurants and tavernas.

Longer drives

The convenience of your hire car means you also visit destinations slightly further afield on your trip to Rome. Approximately an hour away from Rome centre via the SR2, is Calcata, a historic village standing over a cliff made of volcanic rock and surrounded by green forests. The small medieval settlement is low-key tourist attraction which will offer you a taste of alternative Italy, often enjoyed also by the locals.

Why not take a day trip to Tivoli? The town is 30km from Rome, and is popular for its Renaissance style Villa d’Este - built in the 16th century - and it’s beautiful gardens. Tivoli’s thermal baths are also worth a visit.

Top attractions to visit in Rome

Take in some of the best sights in Rome with the flexibility and independence your hire car offers you.

The Trevi Fountain

As they saying goes, ‘when in Rome…’ so a trip to the city wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Trevi Fountain. Toss a coin over your head and make a wish, legend has it that anyone who does this will return to Rome.

Designed by Italian architect Nicola Salvi, the fountain Baroque masterpiece features a marble statue of Neptune at its forefront, surrounded by tritons.

The Colosseum

Needing no introduction, Rome’s Colosseum is a recognised symbol of Rome and was the largest amphitheater in the Roman Empire, holding up to 50,000 people. Of course, due to many centuries of neglect, parts of the Colosseum have now crumbled after it was used for a quarry until the eighteenth century.

With almost four million tourists visiting the site every single year, booking tickets in advance is advised.

St. Peter's Basilica

Located in Vatican City, St Peter’s Basilica was until recently the largest church known to man. Today, it is recognised as one of the holiest sites in Christendom, and the square which lies before the church is often packed full of visitors, crowded to get a glimpse of the pope as he says mass.
