Hiring a car in Palermo

The capital city of Sicily is by far the busiest city on the island, making it a great place for people watching, and for experiencing the rich and diverse culture that the locals have used to carve out a truly unique identity.

One of the most interesting things about this city is that it has largely managed to keep hold of its impressive history while also setting itself up to be a truly modern city that is constantly bustling with life.

Everyone's favourite gourmet coffee, the cappuccino, initially came from the Capuchin monastery on the edge of the city.

Having a coffee is only one part of this city's identity, with the locals carrying a reputation for being hugely friendly and welcoming.

What you need to know

While the locals might be welcoming, the hustle and bustle of the city can make the prospect of planning your trip a little overwhelming. However, with the freedom that comes with having your own hire car, it is much easier to truly appreciate what Palermo has to offer.

Holiday Autos [/] takes the hassle out of hiring a rental car, offering a wide range of top names without the need for filling out endless forms, and there are no hidden fees.

Where to pick up your car

Palermo Airport PMO handled 4,910,791 passengers in 2015 and is the second-largest airport on the island, so it's unsurprising that so many visitors to the island pass through here. Our team are on hand to help you sort out your rental car. Simply head over to the desk at the airport's terminal.

Alternatively, pick up your hire car keys at Palermo train station, where you can quickly get going on enjoying your trip in this fantastic city.

It means you can just focus on enjoying your trip and focus on what you want to see.

Nearby Palermo

The old quarter carries a rustic charm that will appeal to all tourists, meaning that the business of hospitality and welcoming visitors is big here. Here you will find some of the best seafood restaurants around.

To get here, simply take your hire car east along the coast on the E90. The journey takes around an hour.

For all the film enthusiasts out there, head over next to Corleone, which is unsurprisingly the same one from The Godfather and is also the place where the real Mafia 'boss of bosses' Bernardo Provenzano was arrested in 2006.

To get to this iconic sight, head south on E90, then the SS121, before heading south-west on the SS128 and you're there. Again, this drive will take around an hour.

Longer drives

Head over to Monreale, where you can enjoy a cathedral that reflects Norman, Arab and Byzantine art into one impressive show of diversity.

Take your car 20 minutes south-west along Corso Calatafimi, which becomes the SS186 as you head out of town.

One of the longer drives from the city is probably the one that is most worth it. Head south on the S624, then the SP79 for around an hour and 50 minutes, and you will come to Sciacca, which contains therapeutic waters that have been heralded by people since Ancient times.

The thermal springs at this picturesque seaside town are perfect for healing and aches or pains.

San Giovanni degli Eremiti

Sicily is an island that bore witness to a whole variety of cultural influences over the centuries, and nothing better demonstrates this cultural fusion than the San Giovanni degli Eremiti, which with its red domes has a distinctly Moroccan feel about it, as it was once a mosque during the days of Islamic rule.
