Where to go
Shannon itself offers some great coastal scenery, as well as the estuary and all its wildlife. River cruises can also be taken up the Shannon heading inland. For the most part, however, visitors will be heading for the cliffs of the west coast or towards nearby Limerick.
Nearby Shannon
Limerick is less than half an hour away and features King John's Castle, a magnificent 13th century fortress. The 15th century Bunratty Castle, which features the 19th century-themed Folk Park, is closer still and is the most popular day trip attraction in Ireland. The towering Cliffs of Moher are just under an hour away.
Eating and drinking
Shannon and the Limerick area will provide plenty of chances to try out traditional Irish food and drink. Enjoy some tasty Irish stew with soda bread, and don't forget to have a glass of Guinness, Ireland's national drink. There will be plenty of Irish whiskeys to enjoy too.
Things to do
Shannon is a great base for exploring the Gaelic heritage of the west of Ireland. Try Lar na pairce (The Story of The Gaelic Games), just over an hour away beyond Limerick, or, driving a similar length of time northwards, enjoy the Aran islands, a bastion of Gaelic speaking.
Sightseeing
King John's Castle and Bunratty are not the only castle in the region. Don't miss Birr Castle Demesne with its wonderful botanic gardens being an hour and 20 minutes away. Natural wonders include the Aillwee Caves, less than an hour to the north, with their wonderful stalactites and stalagmites.
