Where to go

Known as the island where Odysseus was shipwrecked in Greek mythology, the island of Corfu has a lot to offer. You don't need to travel far from the airport for interesting attractions, but hiring a car means you can go further afield and see everything that the island has on offer.

Nearby Corfu Airport

Less than 20 minutes away from the airport is the iconic palace of Achilleion. Built by the Empress of Austria Elisabeth Bavaria, the stunning palace is surrounded by olive groves and stunning gardens. There is also an interesting myth attached to the building that you can learn all about.

For the beach, head to Paleokastritsa, which offers a stunning bay with emerald waters.

Longer drives

The island of Corfu isn't very large so travelling across it is fairly easy if you have a hire car. This means you can be in Sidari in under an hour, allowing you to enjoy a number of white sand beaches, boat trips and great nightlife.

If you want something a bit different, take a hike on the slopes of Mount Pantokrator. If you manage to reach the top, you'll be met by amazing views across the island.

Eating and drinking

Corfu is the perfect place to enjoy traditional Greek food, especially as restaurants make the most of local produce, including seafood, meat, olives and cheese. While you can find dishes from the rest of Europe on menus, dishes that are particularly excellent in Corfu include tiropitakia and souvlakia.

Things to do

It is tempting to just spend all day on the beach while in Corfu, which you can easily do. However, you can also learn more about the island and Greek mythology at the Achilleion Museum, while Corfu Old Town will make you feel like you've gone back in time. Of course, there's also plenty of shopping for you to do, including great markets.

Sightseeing

One place you need to go to is the Old Fortress of Corfu. Located close to Old Town, the Venetian fortress offers great views and gives you a chance to discover it's interesting history. You might also want to hop on a boat to visit the Vlacherna Monastery, which is located on a small island.
