Where to go

Poitiers is around halfway between Toulouse and France's capital city Paris, with each destination situated just off the A10. Poitiers is a few hours' drive from the coast, but it is close to some beautiful countryside thanks to being in close proximity to several of France's Parc Naturel Regional sites.

Nearby Poitiers Airport

Away from the historic churches and lush gardens of Poitiers itself, you'll find some beautiful landscapes at the nearby Parc Naturel Regional de La Brenne, one of France's finest natural spaces. The park takes just over an hour to reach by car from Poitiers Airport.

Longer drives

A two-hour drive from Poitiers Airport is Limoges, a city known for its exquisitely decorated porcelain. You can see many examples of this art at the local museum. Nantes is around a two-hour and 20-minute drive away and has a stunning cathedral, as well as more modern sights in the form of giant mechanical art installations, including an elephant.

Eating and drinking

France is famous for its wine, with Bordeaux, home to some of the world's best-loved beverages, a three-hour drive from Poitiers Airport. Cognac, birthplace of the brandy, is also close by. For traditional French food, look for eateries serving escargots (snails), gougere (cheese encased in choux pastry) or delicate sweet macarons.

Things to do

The Jardin des Plantes in Poitiers are beautiful botanic gardens, with open green spaces surrounded by colourful flora and fauna of many varieties. There are many medieval and Gothic-style buildings to explore in the Poitiers area too, including the sixth century Church of Sainte-Radegonde and the 12th century Poitiers Cathedral.

Sightseeing

Eglise Notre-Dame-la-Grande is one of the most beautiful examples of architecture in the local area, with its Romanesque style featuring intricate carvings of scenes from the Holy Bible. On special occasions throughout the year, a light show takes place at the church, illuminating its surroundings.
