Car hire at Carcassonne Airport
Carcassonne Airport (CCF) is an international hub in the Languedoc region of France. It serves the city it is named after, lying just 3km to the west and reachable via the D119 road in around ten minutes. Arriving in the city is like stepping into a fairytale, as the medieval citadel is complete with watchtowers and ramparts.
What I need to know
There is a reasonable selection of providers when it comes to Carcassonne Airport car rental, meaning you have lots of choice. From a mini to an estate to a minivan, you will be able to find the right car at the right price for your family. Compare car hire deals with the Holiday Autos site and pay no credit fees and have the option of free cancellation should you need it.
Where to pick up my car
Most of Carcassonne Airport car hire companies have desks within the terminal building and as it’s a small airport, they’re easy to spot. There are a small number that have bases elsewhere in the airport grounds, so be sure to check this when booking your hire car. Staff will be happy to direct you.

Where to go
Carcassonne is split into two parts – the citadel and the new town – with most tourists flocking to see the impressive historic area. Be sure to take in the more contemporary aspect too and enjoy the sleepy central square with its relaxed way of life. Away from the city centre, the Canal du Midi offers a wonderful focal point for walks.
Nearby Carcassonne Airport
Get away from the tourists by driving for less than half an hour to the charming town of Caunes-Minervois. Also built in medieval times, it has some fascinating corners to explore and see what everyday life is like in this part of France. Alternatively, you’ll want to head to the Cathar Castles of Les Tours to relive the struggles for power between 1000AD and 1300AD.
Longer drives
From Carcassonne Airport you can pretty much go anywhere in the south of France with your hire car. Don’t let borders be barriers, however, as you could be in Andorra or the Spanish cities of Barcelona and Zaragoza within a matter of hours. This opens up even more opportunity to explore the culture of this part of Europe.
Eating and drinking
Being in France, it’s not surprising that Carcassonne is fantastic for food and drink. The cuisine of the Languedoc region is particularly varied and every town, city and village does its specialities differently. Among the things you should certainly try are cassoulet, tapenade, sausages, goats’ cheese and honey. Be sure to wash it down with some local wine, once the car is parked up for the evening.
Things to do
While visiting the citadel is undoubtedly the number one thing to do in Carcassonne, there are a wide selection of other activities to enjoy. These include shopping at the unique little boutiques and wine tasting in the surrounding area. Simply strolling through the streets is another pastime that should not be overlooked. You are on holiday after all.
Sightseeing
Many of Carcassonne’s premier sights are collected inside the hilltop citadel, which was made a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site in 1997. Walk the walls, explore the drawbridges, towers and cobbled streets and learn more about the history of this atmospheric place, which is said to have inspired Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle.
