Where to go

Once you are in possession of your hire car, St Austell serves as a great base to explore the glorious Cornwall region. However, if you want to see what St Austell itself has to offer, there are plenty of lovely pubs and independent shops, as well as a couple of museums.

Nearby St Austell

The Eden Project, just 10 minutes drive south of St Austell, is definitely worth your time. This popular visitor attraction features the largest indoor rainforest in the world, housed in distinctive eco-domes that look like a cross between a bubble and a golf ball.

Longer drives

The Cornwall region is blessed with an abundance of beautiful beaches. The closest to St Austell are Porthpean and Charlestown beaches, but if you fancy stretching your car’s legs with a mini roadtrip, you could head to Treyarnon Bay, which lies in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty next to Constantine Bay.

Eating and drinking

Cornwall is renowned for its hearty home-baked food and you won’t have to look to hard to find it in and around St Austell. Cream tea is synonymous with the region, as are Cornish pasties, which are now responsible for contributing more than five per cent of the Cornish economy.

One of the area’s more bizarre dishes is stargazy pie, which consists of eggs and potatoes covered in a pastry crust then baked. The twist is that the heads of several pilchards are left poking out from the crust, as if they were gazing at the stars.

Things to do

There’s plenty to keep you entertained in St Austell, such as the independent St Austell Brewery, Kidzworld and football golf, which is exactly as it sounds. With so many beaches dotted about, St Austell is a paradise for surfers, but if you don’t have much talent for riding the waves then you’re sure to enjoy relaxing on the sand.

St Austell and the surrounding area is rich with natural beauty and outstanding sights. In addition to the Eden Project, sightseers should investigate the Lost Gardens of Heligan - a restored sub-tropical estate. Here is your chance to visit Lands End - the most westerly point of mainland England - which is only 53 miles away from St Austell.
