Car Hire at Swindon

The Wiltshire town of Swindon is situated just off the M4 motorway, almost exactly in the middle of Reading and Bristol. Famous as the home of the Great Western Railway, Swindon and its surroundings are today best explored by road, with car hire allowing you to experience the glorious freedom of the open road.

What I need to know

Swindon car rental outlets can be found throughout the town, but at Holiday Autos we compare car hire deals for you to find the ideal option for your requirements. You only need to give us your details once and we won't charge you a credit card fee. Instead, we'll concentrate on assessing over 1,500 suppliers to get you the best deal.

Where to pick up my car

Multiple Swindon car hire suppliers can be found in the town centre, with many big-name companies all having outlets based in the vicinity. Bristol Airport (BRS) is just a 45-minute drive from the town, making Swindon the ideal place to pick up a hire car on your way elsewhere in the south-west.

Car Hire Reviews Swindon

  • “The pick-up was easy, it took 5 minutes from arriving at the desk to driving out the car, and the return took even less time.”

Where to go

Swindon is close to the breathtaking countryside of the Cotswolds, which can be easily reached by car. Historic cities including Bath, Oxford and Winchester are also within easy driving distance, while ancient Neolithic monuments can be seen at nearby Stonehenge. Meanwhile, at the Swindon and Cricklade Steam Railway, you can step back in time to a slightly more recent era.

Nearby Swindon

If you want to experience untouched English countryside, there's the Cotswolds (45 minutes' drive from Swindon) and the North Wessex Downs (30 minutes), which are both official Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Roman Baths of Bath are also under an hour's drive away, while Highclere Castle, where Downton Abbey was filmed, is 45 minutes from Swindon by car.

Longer Drives

Now best known for the world-famous music festival in nearby Pilton, Glastonbury (1 hour, 45 minutes' drive from Swindon) was once best known for the distinctive tower that stands atop Glastonbury Tor and is rumoured to be the resting place of the legendary King Arthur. London is just two hours away by car, with countless attractions, including Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament.

Eating and drinking

The weekly Sunday Swindon Farmers' Market is the best place to buy locally-produced food from the area, and if you're venturing into nearby Somerset for an overnight stay, take advantage of the amazing local cider while you don't have to drive for the evening.

Things to do

The ruins of the 7th century Glastonbury Abbey are around an hour and 45 minutes' drive away. Here, you'll learn all about the legend of King Arthur, the Norman Conquest and the ghostly spirits that are said to haunt the ancient building. Although providing a significant contrast, Swindon's Museum of Computing is well worth a visit, exploring the history of a relatively modern invention, but one that's already changed beyond recognition in its short lifetime.

Sightseeing

Just 45 minutes by car from Swindon is Bristol Zoo, where you can see everything from meerkats to gorillas. The nearby city is also home to the former passenger ship SS Great Britain, which was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and today houses a museum exploring nautical history.
