Historic cities including Bath, Oxford and Winchester are also within easy driving distance, while ancient Neolithic monuments can be seen at nearby Stonehenge. Meanwhile, at the Swindon and Cricklade Steam Railway, you can step back in time to a slightly more recent era.

London is just two hours away by car, with countless attractions, including Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament.

The weekly Sunday Swindon Farmers' Market is the best place to buy locally-produced food from the area, and if you're venturing into nearby Somerset for an overnight stay, take advantage of the amazing local cider while you don't have to drive for the evening.

Things to do

The ruins of the 7th century Glastonbury Abbey are around an hour and 45 minutes' drive away. Here, you'll learn all about the legend of King Arthur, the Norman Conquest and the ghostly spirits that are said to haunt the ancient building. Although providing a significant contrast, Swindon's Museum of Computing is well worth a visit, exploring the history of a relatively modern invention, but one that's already changed beyond recognition in its short lifetime.

Sightseeing

Just 45 minutes by car from Swindon is Bristol Zoo, where you can see everything from meerkats to gorillas. The nearby city is also home to the former passenger ship SS Great Britain, which was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and today houses a museum exploring nautical history.
