Where to go

Poole's harbour is a great place to spend time on a boat, with Brownsea Island well worth visiting as it is almost the only place in southern England where you can see red squirrels. Poole's seafront merges into Bournemouth's and features some fine stretches of sand, with Sandbanks being arguably the finest beach in Britain.

Nearby Poole

While Bournemouth is next door, just beyond Christchurch is the boundary of the New Forest national Park. Those seeking great scenery can also head west ten miles to see the Isle of Portland and the adjacent Fleet, Britain's largest lagoon. The cities of Southampton and are about 40 and 55 minutes away respectively.

Longer drives

Poole makes a great base to explore the south of England. London is about three hours away by car, while the historic city of Bath is just over an hour and a half. It takes just over an hour to get to the famous Wiltshire stone circles of Avebury and Stonehenge.

Eating and drinking

As a port, Poole is a good place to eat seafood and of course there is always the traditional British seafront fish and chips. For a good local drink, the south-west of England is famous for its cider and various brews can be enjoyed in the town.

Things to do

Poole Harbour is great for birdwatching and sailing, while the beach is always close at hand. The New Forest offers horse riding and walking, Poole Museum offers an insight into the history of the town, and a great evening out is on offer at Tower Park, the biggest entertainment complex on the south coast.

Sightseeing

While there is much to see in the two national parks, the Jurassic Coast to the west of Poole is particularly worth exploring. As well as its rugged cliffs and panoramic sea views, it has long been renowned as a great place to see prehistoric fossils. For some indoor fun involving present-day creatures, try Bournemouth Aquarium.
