Car hire in Kirkcaldy

The Fife town of Kirkcaldy sits on the east coast of Scotland, less than 12 miles north of Edinburgh.

Kirkcaldy’s nearest international airport is Edinburgh Airport (EDI), which is around 26 miles to the south of the town and reachable in around 40 minutes’ drive.

What I need to know

If you have little time to compare car car hire deals, fear not. At Holiday Autos, we do all the legwork, comparing offers from 1,500 rental companies to find you the best price. To date, we have helped over five million customers in more than 170 countries source their perfect rental car. If that wasn’t enough, we’ll never charge you to use your credit card and, if for whatever reason, you don’t need the hire car anymore, then there’s no cancellation charge.

Where to pick up my car

You’ll find a handful of car hire companies within Kirkcaldy itself, but there is a much broader selection an hour’s drive away in Edinburgh. Depending on the individual provider, the car will likely be on site at the company’s office or a short walk away in a nearby car park.

Car Hire Reviews Kirkcaldy

  • “The pick-up was easy, it took 5 minutes from arriving at the desk to driving out the car, and the return took even less time.”

Where to go

Venturing around Kirkcaldy itself, you’ll be able to visit Kirkcaldy Galleries with its vibrant cafe, well-stocked library and brilliant galleries that even include a section dedicated to the Beatles. Also dotted around the town are Dysart Harbour and the 85-acre Ravenscraig Park, which is blessed with the ruins of Ravenscraig Castle, dating back to the 15th century.

Nearby Kirkcaldy

Edinburgh may sound close to Kirkcaldy, lying just 12 miles south of the town, however, you’ll actually have to drive for almost 30 miles to get there, due to the two being separated by the North Sea.

Still, at about an hour’s drive, it’s very manageable and worthwhile to experience such a momentous city with world-class attractions, such as Arthur’s Seat, the 70-acre Royal Botanic Garden and Camera Obscura - a five-floor tower made up of hands-on optical illusions.

Looking elsewhere, a short drive west will get you to Dunfermline, while the city of Dundee sits just 30 miles north of Kirkcaldy.

Longer drives

If you really want to stick some miles on your Kirkcaldy hire car, then the city of Glasgow is 55 miles west. Here, you’ll be able to visit Kelvingrove Art Gallery, the Riverside Museum of Transport & Travel or hammer your bank balance on Buchanan Street.

Heading even further out, Aberdeen is 95 miles north, taking just over two hours to reach.

Eating and drinking

Scotland is home to some unique food that simply demands to be tasted. Perhaps the most famous is haggis, which traditionally consists of sheep’s liver, heart and lung minced with suet (or fat), onion, oats and spices. It may not sound appetising but trust us, it’s delicious. The country is also renowned worldwide for its whisky, so here’s your chance to taste some fine - and maybe even obscure - blends.

Things to do

Heading out of Kirkcaldy, Edinburgh offers plenty of opportunities for good times with the National Museum of Scotland, the Scottish National Gallery and a zoo comprising over 1,000 animals. Loch Lomond Shores is another great day trip destination, with more than its fair share of fun activities and top-quality shops.

Sightseeing

Old Kirk is Kirkcaldy’s oldest church, dating back to the 13th century, while Kirkcaldy Town House is considered to be the centrepiece of the town’s civic square. Getting out of Kirkcaldy though, it’s worth driving over to Edinburgh to see the city’s magnificent castle, St Giles’ Cathedral and Royal Botanic Garden.
