Half an hour away from Falmouth via the A39 is Cornwall's only city. While it may seem more like a large town than a big city, Truro has plenty of charm. As well as its winding cobbled streets that feature some hidden gems and a great range of shops, it is also home to the stunning Truro Cathedral.

Longer drives

To really get a glimpse of Cornwall's history and learn about some of its legends, drive down the A394 to St Michael's Mount. The small island is located in Mount's Bay and you can get a boat to it when the tide is in or walk across the sand when it's out. Alternatively, drive across the Tamar to the Devon city of Plymouth

Eating and drinking

You can't really go to Falmouth without trying the pride and joy of the county, the Cornish pasty. Traditionally the food of miners, these pastry delights can fill you up and ensure you're ready for a day of exploring. Other local treats include clotted cream - usually served with a cream tea - and ice cream. Of course, you can also indulge in fish and chips featuring the catch of the day.

As well as heading into the town to visit the local and high street shops, you can learn about the area's seafaring history at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall. There's also the chance to get lost in the hedge maze at Glendurgan Garden or soak up the sun at the picturesque and secluded Trebah Beach.

Cornwall is just one big opportunity for sightseeing and Falmouth is no different. As well as there being plenty of great pubs that allow you to watch the sun set over the harbour or River Fal, you can also head to the beautiful Pendennis Castle. Built by Henry VIII, the castle offers amazing views and fantastic family events.
