Just a 15-minute drive from Elgin is Lossiemouth, a fishing port and regarded as the jewel in Moray's crown. You can learn all about its history at the Lossiemouth Fisheries and Community Museum. Scotland also offers some great golfing opportunities, with the Moray Golf Club just a few moments' drive from Lossiemouth.
Longer drives
Inverness is an hour and five minutes' drive from Elgin. The historic Urquhart Castle can be found here on the edge of Loch Ness - home of the mythical monster. Aberdeen is an hour and 45 minutes from Elgin by car, where the turreted Craigievar Castle will make you feel like you've stepped inside a fairytale.
Eating and drinking
Fresh fish and seafood can be found in abundance in Elgin thanks to its close proximity to the fishing port of Lossiemouth. Alternatively, sample traditional Scottish dishes such as haggis with neeps and tatties and make sure to take as much sweet, buttery shortbread as you can carry.
Things to do
Scotland is home to hundreds of castles, with both Spynie Castle and Duffus Castle in the Elgin area. Spynie Castle is the largest surviving medieval bishop's house in Scotland, having been standing for more than 500 years. Meanwhile, the crumbling ruins of Duffus Castle date from 1190. Both are well worth a visit.
Sightseeing
The Grade I-listed ruins of Elgin Cathedral date from 1224 and tell a fascinating tale of Scottish history. The nearby Pluscarden Abbey is another beautiful architectural example. Monks still reside in the abbey, but tourists can visit the building and its surrounding gardens and can even attend Mass with the monks themselves.
