Where to go
Hiring a car from Blackpool means you can experience fellow seaside towns Lytham St Annes (18 minutes away by car) and Fleetwood (25 minutes' drive away), while Southport is just over an hour away. Lancaster and Preston are the nearest cities, but Manchester and Liverpool can also be reached in under two hours.
Nearby Blackpool
A 50-minute drive along the coast from Blackpool will take you to Morecambe Bay, where you can walk along the prom and see the statue dedicated to local comedy duo Morecambe and Wise. Meanwhile, Lancaster is three-quarters of an hour away from Blackpool by car, home to Lancaster Castle and an authentic Roman bath house.
Longer drives
The fascinating Lancashire witch trials of the 19th century are commemorated at the Pendle Heritage Centre (1 hour, 5 minutes from Blackpool), while the industrial heritage of the north can be explored at the Museum of Science and Industry and through the works of LS Lowry at The Lowry art gallery, a little further afield in Manchester and Salford (1 hour, 23 minutes, and 57 minutes away, respectively).
Top Attractions
Eating and drinking
Eat a 99 ice cream (topped with raspberry sauce, of course) while walking along the pier, buy a stick of Blackpool rock to nibble on and don't allow yourself to leave the town until you've eaten traditional British fish and chips by the sea; the 'world-famous' Harry Ramsden's on the promenade serves some of the very best.
Things to do
Your Blackpool to-do-list has to feature the Pleasure Beach theme park, the three piers and the Golden Mile with its countless amusement arcades, which is also home to the north's very own Madame Tussauds Waxwork Museum. Coronation Street fans will want to the spot where Alan Bradley was famously killed by a tram in 1989. There's even a special plaque dedicated to the character.
Sightseeing
Taking advantage of Blackpool car rental to explore the rest of Lancashire means you can play the classic 'first one to spot Blackpool Tower wins 20p' car game on your return for a truly authentic Great British holiday experience. Arguably the most thrilling view of Blackpool though is the one that can be seen through the glass floor at the top of the tower itself.
