Bedford has a range of historic attractions, as well as an attractive riverside with plenty of parkland alongside it and footbridges to help visitors explore.
The John Bunyan Museum features artefacts and writings from the life and times of the author, who is famous for writing The Pilgrim's Progress and lived in the town.
Nearby Bedford
The town lies close to a range of fascinating places, with the historic university city of Cambridge to the east, while to the west lies Milton Keynes, which includes Bletchley Park, now a visitor attraction, where Britain's second world war codebreakers worked. To the south is Luton and Dunstable, the latter famous for its scenic downs.
Longer drives
Longer drives offer easy access down the M1 to London or up to Nottingham, home of the legendary Robin Hood. East Anglia has spectacular cathedrals in Ely, Peterborough and Norwich, with the latter city next to the Broads, a popular area of artificial lakes and a great place to go for a boat ride.
Eating and drinking
Bedford has a wealth of restaurants and bars, with many located in and around the historic medieval heart of the town. However, there are many more places to eat and drink on either bank of the river, with these offering outdoor tables that provide a great waterside experience in the summer.
Things to do
As well as the John Bunyan Museum, the Higgins Art gallery and Museum offers a fine insight into the town and its history. The building is based in a former brewery. There is also a boating lake by the river.
A few miles from Bedford, the Shuttleworth Collection houses a superb collection of vintage vehicles and aircraft, including some of the earliest ever to take to the skies.
Sightseeing
In addition to the riverside, the town features the wetland habitat of Priory Park, a lovely oasis of lakes, pools, marshland and streams. It is a particularly good place to enjoy bird watching, with several hides and a variety of waterfowl.
