Where to pick up your car

Where to go

Naturally, the beaches are hugely popular in Fuerteventura. In fact, the island boasts more than 150 beaches along its 350km coastline, giving you plenty of choices when it comes to finding the perfect spot to relax in the sun.

Antigua, in the centre of the island, is one of the oldest villages in Fuerteventura. You can see the windmill on the Antigua Mill Craft Centre, which showcases the history of the area, as well as exhibiting local crafts and sculpture.

Tarajalejo is a beautiful fishing on the south coast of the island, which is perfect for trying your hand at watersports such as surfing or kayaking. This area is perfect if you're looking for all the amenities of a coastal location but want to avoid the crowds, as it rarely gets inundated with tourists.

Nearby Fuerteventura

Just ten minutes north of the airport in Fuerteventura is Puerto del Rosario, the capital of the country.

This town is the perfect example of Canarian culture, with many small alleys surrounding the harbour lined with stunning houses and architecture. If you're looking for some retail therapy, then you won't be disappointed. Development in recent years has seen a wave of new shops opening, making this the perfect place to while away a few hours.

Another great option is Caleta de Fuste, which is just 10km south of the airport. The area, which is one of the major tourist towns on the island, is often known as Castillo.

As well as the beautiful beach, you can spend hours exploring the tree-lined streets, many of which are filled with a great choice of bars and restaurants. For keen golfers, there's also an 18-hole golf course, which is near to the town's large shopping complex.

Longer drives

Make the most of your hire car and try to explore as many of the stunning towns and villages of Fuerteventura as possible.

If you drive 40 minutes north of the airport you'll reach Corralejo, the largest of the island's tourist areas. It has been heavily influenced by the modern amenities that any tourist destination craves, but has retained much of its traditional architecture - making Corralejo a truly beautiful place to visit.

For something a bit different, why not drive an hour and a half south of the airport to Jandía Natural Park? The beach here is truly stunning while the entire area is filled with natural beauty. You can also see the island's highest peak, La Zarza, which is perfect for a walk.

Eating and drinking

The cuisine in Fuerteventura is typically Spanish, with a great choice of tapas dishes in most of the restaurants. Local delicacies include papas arrugadas, pejines, mejillones and queso majorero.

However, if you prefer something more like you would find at home, then the bigger tourist towns also offer a variety of British restaurants, as well as Chinese, Indian and Italian.

Even the smallest towns and villages will have bars where you can enjoy a refreshing drink in the sun. If you're looking to spend a night on the town, then larger destinations such as Corralejo have a vibrant nightlife scene, with a number of bars and clubs open until the early hours.

Things to do

Having so many beaches means that Fuerteventura has a great choice of water-based activities. The bigger beaches tend to offer an array of watersports such as jet skiing, surfing and kayaking.

If you head to either Corralejo or Caleta then you can take a 30-minute ferry ride over to the nearby island of Lanzarote. Take in the sights of Playa Blanca, and enjoy the beaches, shopping and beautiful sights of this neighbouring island.

You can also head to La Lajita Oasis Park, Fuerteventura's zoo. See a range of animals, from hippopotamuses to giraffes, as well as over 200 species of bird.

Sightseeing

There are so many beautiful destinations in Fuerteventura that you won't have time to see them all.

You can spend a day exploring the beaches, searching for your own hidden gem on the coast with crystal clear water and beautiful white sand.

The town of La Oliva is also a stunning place to see, boasting traditional and unique architecture. Don't miss out on a visit to the Colonel’s House, which was built in 1708. You can also pay a visit to Gran Tarajal, a quaint town that boasts incredible features along its streets and in the main square.
