Barcelona Airport (BCN) is seven and a half miles southwest of the city centre and the main gateway to Catalonia. It is the second biggest airport in Spain and one of the busiest transport hubs in the world. This is due to the huge tourist draw of Barcelona, with its stunning architecture and wonderful vibe. Where to go

In every neighbourhood of Barcelona you will find something exciting to explore. There is the beach at Barceloneta, fantastic shopping opportunities at Eixample and the old town, which is known as the Gothic Quarter. Head to Montjuic for stunning views of the city and to see the stadium that was built for Barcelona’s Olympic Games.

The mountain destination of Montserrat lies just a three-quarters of an hour away from Barcelona Airport. It is home to a Benedictine monastery, set in stunning scenery and with beautiful views over the surrounding countryside. Alternatively, make your way to Sitges, just 20 minutes from the airport, and take advantage of its beaches, restaurants and cafes.

Longer drives

If you are an art lover, you will not be able to resist driving for an hour and a half to get to Figueres. As the birthplace of Salvador Dali, it is the destination for a major museum of his works and a must-visit for any aficionado. If you prefer medieval architecture, then head to Girona, where you will find a magnificent walled old quarter and landscaped gardens to stroll in.

Eating and drinking

You could easily spend your whole time eating in Barcelona and not get bored. Whether you are enjoying choosing tapas from a huge array spread down the length of a bar or eating on the go in the famous Boqueria Market, your taste buds will thank you. Opting for a menu del dia is always good if you are hungry and looking for the best value for money.

Things to do

Barcelona has no shortage of things to do and there is something to suit all tastes. If you love football, then catching a game at the Camp Nou Stadium, or even just taking a look at the trophy room will be at the top of your list. There’s a very strong Picasso Museum and an institution dedicated to the works of Joan Miro for modern art enthusiasts, so you can take your pick.

Sightseeing

When it comes to sightseeing in Barcelona, the big name is Antoni Gaudi. Tickets for his masterpieces, including the Sagrada Familia and Park Guell should be booked in advance. It’s also worth ticking off some of his other buildings, such as Casa Batllo and Casa Mila, with its stone carvings on the roof, for a wider view of his works.
