Where to go
This is the second-largest country in central Europe, so you'll be positively spoilt for places to go. There's Bran Castle in Transylvania, made famous by Bram Stoker's Count Dracula, the stunning Danube Delta, the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest and the Painted Monasteries of Bucovina, to name but a few. It's worth hiring a car to explore, as many destinations are quite far apart.
Nearby
Romania has a fairly modest road structure, but it's easy to get around by car. Speed limits are typically 100 km/h in rural areas and 50 km/h in towns and cities and you should beware of sudden braking to avoid animals in the mountains. Rentals and taxis can be very expensive, so having your own vehicle is advisable.
Longer drives
Romania is a fascinating country to discover by road, with the Transfagarasan and TransAplina thoroughfares over the Carpathian Mountains among the most popular and jaw-dropping tourist drives scenery-wise. You can also check out Transylvania's cities for history. In summer, the Black Sea coast is the ideal spot for sunbathing by day and clubbing by night.
Bucharest
Bucharest is a great place for a city break. It has the largest parliament building in the world, the Romanian Atheneum (home to the George Enescu Philharmonic) and a plethora of excellent restaurants and museums. It also has a hip, laidback atmosphere and some very bohemian drinking gardens.
Timisoara
Timisoara is a university city in western Romania, also known as the city of roses and parks. It has a great nightlife, but lots of churches and theatres too. Visit in spring for gorgeous displays of tulips in the many green spaces it has to offer.
Brasov
Surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains, Transylvanian Brasov has some awesome scenery that's perfect for photo opportunities. You'll also find fascinating medieval history in the old town. However, that's not to say that it's reliant on the past - there's a bustling city vibe to be had here too.
