  • “The pick-up was easy, it took 5 minutes from arriving at the desk to driving out the car, and the return took even less time.”

Where to go

Kotor is perhaps the most popular tourist hotspot in Montenegro, thanks to its charming old town nesting in the Bay of Boka.

It's like stepping back in time, as it boasts wonderfully old-fashioned architecture, beautiful churches, museums, Venetian palaces and plenty of cafes with outdoor seating.

Nearby

There are several rules of the road to be aware of when driving a hire car in this part of Eastern Europe. For instance, drivers must be at least 18 years old, with drivers and passengers are all required to wear seat belts.

Traffic moves on the right-hand side in Montenegro, while vehicles entering a roundabout always have right of way.

The speed limit for cars is 50 km per hour in built-up areas, 80 km per hour outside built-up areas, 100 km per hour on motorways and 130 km per hour on highways.

Longer drives

It's well worth taking your hire car out to explore the Bay of Kotor, driving from Herceg Novi to Kotor along the butterfly-shaped bay.

Motorists will be treated to countless viewpoints and wonderful places to stop off along the way.

Once you've gone round the bay, drivers should carry on through the villages of Muo, Prcanj and Stoliv to emerge at the ferry port town of Lepetane.

Eating and drinking

Montenegro has a number of delicacies well worth sampling. Fans of Irish stew will certainly enjoy Kuvani Brav or boiled lamb.

Alternatively, Kačamak or polenta is made of buttered potato and cornmeal in kaymak (fresh salted cream), served with yoghurt, buttermilk or cold milk.

Things to do

Bobotov Kuk is the highest peak in the Durmitor mountain range and one of the highest in Montenegro full stop.

It's therefore ideal for anyone who wants to indulge in a bit climbing or hiking. Visitors can also be treated to stunning views of the Veliko Skrcko Jezero and Malo Skrcko Jezero.

Another recommended location is the Tara Canyon. Located in the Durmitor National Park, you can spend a day rafting on the river.

Sightseeing

The roads really do offer some of the best views of Montenegro. The drive from Kotor to Sveti Stefan offers some spectacular scenery, particularly once you arrive at Budva and see the coastal views along Jaz Beach.

The route along the Serpentine Road between Kotor and Lovcen National Park is also a remarkable spectacle for hire car drivers in Montenegro.
