Hiring a car in Gran Canaria

There are lots of great car companies in Gran Canaria including Avis, Keddy and Europcar.

Gran Canaria is one of the most popular Canary Islands, based in the North Atlantic Ocean off the coast of West Africa.

The main road in Gran Canaria is the GC-1, which runs from La Garita on the east coast, down to Maspalomas in the south and across to Puerto Rico.

By hiring a car, you can explore as much or as little of the island as you wish, from the busier towns to the smaller villages.

What you need to know

There are a number of car hire providers available in Gran Canaria, and you can find the most competitive deal by searching on our website.

Choose from a large vehicle with room for the entire family to a sporty model that you can enjoy driving down the coast.

You can also be reassured by the 24/7 support, as well as the free cancellation and amendments, meaning there's no need to worry if you find that your circumstances change.

Where to pick up your car

You can pick up your hire car from Las Palmas airport (LPA), at the supplier desks which are based on the ground floor, in the walkway connecting the international and EU arrivals halls.

You'll find that booking in advance is beneficial, as you will not only get a much better price, but you can be confident that your vehicle is ready and waiting when your flight lands.

You can also be reassured by the well-known suppliers that are available, including Budget, Thrifty, Hertz and Europcar.

Where to go

Gran Canaria is most popular for its stunning white sandy beaches, which stretch across the entirety of the south coast of the island. The most well-known are Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas Beach, both of which also have a great number of bars and restaurants along the promenade for you to enjoy.

The island of Gran Canaria is hugely diverse, so if you drive inland you can explore the beautiful mountainous scenery. Walk through the area to really take it in, and if you're feeling active you can even climb Roque Nublo to see even more views across the island.

Nearby Gran Canaria

Being the capital, Las Palmas is unsurprisingly the most popular destination among tourists. You can explore the streets of Vegueta, the original old town area, or head to the main square where you will see the Cathedral of Santa Ana.

If you're looking for some retail therapy or to pick up a few souvenirs, you'll also find plenty of options for shopping nearby.

Just 20 minutes south of Las Palmas is Telde, the island's second-biggest city. If you head to the older neighbourhoods of San Juan and San Francisco you can revel in the Gran Canaria's history and culture while you explore the churches, museums and stunning cobbled streets.

Longer drives

Having a hire car means that you can go anywhere that you wish to explore during your visit to Gran Canaria.

Why not drive an hour to reach Puerto Rico on the south coast of the island? This is renowned for being the sunniest spot, so make sure to pack your sun lotion. This is the perfect place to enjoy some watersports, including jetskiing, sailing, diving, big-game fishing and windsurfing.

Alternatively, Maspalomas is just 40 minutes from Las Palmas, an area that's considered very up-market. It's separated from Playa del Ingles by 400 hectares of sand dunes, an area that was declared a national park in the 1990s and can be crossed either on foot or by camel.

Maspalomas boasts the largest golf course in Gran Canaria, as well as 17km of stunning coastline. It's also a popular destination for business travellers, being home to the Gran Canaria conference centre with a capacity of more than 5,000.

If you're looking for a lively night out, then you can find a number of bars and clubs in all of the island's major towns. Las Palmas has great options for those looking for a night on the town, as well as plenty of quieter bars for those who would prefer to enjoy a relaxed drink in the sun.
