Rochdale was historically part of the county of Lancashire, whose signature dish is Lancashire hotpot. Traditionally made from lamb and topped with sliced potatoes, you'll find this comforting dish on the menus of many local eateries. Nearby Manchester has its own signature sweet treat, the Manchester tart, which features layers of raspberry jam, custard, coconut and cherry in a pastry case.

Rochdale is home to several fascinating museums, including the Pioneers Museum, which tells the story of the modern co-operative movement, which began with the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society in 1844. A stroll along the Rochdale Canal offers some beautiful views of the Pennines and the remnants of the town's industrial history. Historic mills line the towpaths, along with quaint stone cottages and lockkeepers' houses. A barge trip along the canal will eventually take you all the way to Manchester city centre.
