Car hire at Basel Airport
Car hire at Basel Airport
Basel airport, also known as EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg, is located around 3.5km from Basel in Switzerland. However, it is actually located in France close to the German border, making it a truly international airport and the perfect base from which to explore this part of Europe. You can reach Basel, the nearest city, via a 2.5km customs road and then the A3.
What I need to know
You'll probably want to compare car hire before you leave home, so be sure to check out our dedicated site. There's a wide range of providers to choose from at Basel Airport and no credit card fee either. We also offer free cancellation for added peace of mind.
Where to pick up my car
The airport consists of one terminal building with four levels, split into French and Swiss sectors. Level two is where the car hire desks are situated, but do ask at the Airport Information Desk on the same floor if you need assistance. The car parks for pick-up are in the basement (level one).
“The pick-up was easy, it took 5 minutes from arriving at the desk to driving out the car, and the return took even less time.”
Where to go
Basel airport is really conveniently located for exploring some of Europe's best destinations, whether you want bustling cities, rolling countryside or ancient archaeology. There are lots of places within easy driving distance, so you won't be short of things to do during your break once you get behind the wheel of your hire car.
Nearby Basel airport
Basel is the closest city to the airport and is well worth using as your base. You'll find beautiful cobbled streets in the medieval old town, as well as plenty of cultural and fun things to do with the family. Some 20km away is French Mulhouse, famous for its museums and industrial heritage, while Alsace province offers great architecture, cuisine and scenery.
If you want to head further afield in your hire car, there are plenty of options from Basel. An hour and 40 minutes away is the stunning Black Forest, home to pretty towns like Baden-Baden and lots of open countryside in which to enjoy outdoor pursuits. Meanwhile, the Jura Mountains are just over an hour away and offer activities including hiking, cycling and skiing, all in a gorgeous alpine setting.
Eating and drinking
Basel alone has a thriving restaurant and cafe scene and you can find both traditional and modern places to eat. Sampling the coffee is a must, while ethnic restaurants like Chinese, Middle Eastern, Indian or Thai are worth checking out. Try lunchtime meals for the best deals.
Things to do
Basel airport car hire gives you access to some great things to do. There's Basel Zoo and the bustling market at Marktplatz, as well as more than two dozen museums in the centre of Basel. For something really different, try a guided tour of the underground sewerage system - seriously.
Basel offers some wonderful photo opportunities, including the Romanesque Munster cathedral and the gates to the walled city, constructed to protect residents after the great earthquake of 1356. Definitely walk along the River Rhine's promenade too, with the bridges offering excellent vantage points and the chance for some relaxation time.
